AFAIK there is NO way (either hardware or software) to unlock the DVD or Bluray regions of the PS3, however there are a number of Blurays without any region coding.

Why would they do it though? Just buy a cheap upscaling DVD player for about £30 that will do the same job if it's bothering you that much.

Am I going to have the same problem with a Hong Kong purchased PS3 when I bring it back to the UK?

I would assume so, but currently all (most?) Blu-Rays are region free. So, as said above, buy el cheapo upscaling dvd player for your region two stuff.

Because a cheap upscaling DVD player is just that, CHEAP!silly ( you get what you pay for in AV). Now i know the ps3 isnt the best dvd player on the market, but it gets a good review in what hi-fi mag as a stand alone DVD player.readit
I dont see why i should have to buy another dvd player just for my reagon 1 dvds when Blue-ray films no matter what reagon will play on a uk ps3.blabla
so if blue-ray film and games are reagon free why cant all dvds be reagon free!?
it makes no sense!. Update it Sony for F++k sake ! furious

I'm pretty sure that not all blu-rays will play on the PS3, only those from our region and those that are region free.

You're going to be in a small minority of people who buy DVDs from another region and it doesn't really make any business sense for Sony whatsoever for them to spend money developing it for that purpose when they'll make more money from DVD sales in the specific region it's designed for.

I agree with Steve, not all Blurays are region free. I'm pretty sure that any pixar film for example has a region code on it. There's a website somewhere that lists which discs are free of region coding.

Sony won't develop a region free mod as Sony Pictures would have an absolute fit.

i stand corrected. you are right, only some blue ray films are region free, but the games still are all region free at the moment....
I shall just have to wait for a region hack or something.

If that's true, does that mean you can play Japanese import games on a UK PS3?

Yeah, games from any region will work.
