its an online-only motorsports simulation targetted at real-world drivers and hardcore simmers.
all stats are tracked, there's leagues and championships with license promotion to higher levels. There's also a safety-rating system to encourage wrecking-free driving. iRating measures driver skill and the system attempts to match people of similar skills in the races. Its basically the best of pickup and league racing all in one juicy hyper-realistic package.

Those who are in already got one of the 10-invites-per-beta-tester that were collected and handed in on 13th June. (invite emails went out on Wednesday)
btw for those wanting to buddy up - post real names here (no usernames/handles/nicks in iracing).

Wow, is that THE Justin Wilson (seems like a common enough name)? I raced him last night! 
Dale Jr. is omg-fast at Lime Rock, i've never seen a 1.02 there, let alone a mid 2! I've just cracked into the 3's, and the quickest i'd seen live is a 1.03.2. :/

Had a little go at the weekend, i quite like it, apart from the fact you feel like your at school.... don't go on the grass, don't spin.... if your supposed to push to improve yourself you are going to spin off.. um i am going to tell the teacher who is going to knock some points off your license... suck my plumbs.
Most real world school type racing series (which is what you can consider the rookie series in iracing) will black flag any competitor who runs off the track.
Only computer racing is about learning by going off track. The computer racing syndrome consists of going into a corner too hot, crashing, resetting, trying again only a little slower, rinse, repeat. Real world racing is all about building up to speed.

It will be good if this system stops people from just ramming each other for a laugh in online races, like you get in rFactor as it stops me from playing the game online unless its a league race.
BUT .. I think that a small minority might still act like this in iRacing and because of the penalty system it will be much much more annoying. Some people seem to go online just to upset other people, and I can see iRacing being an easy target, I also hope they have a very good anticheat system as people are guaranteed to try and cheat.
So I will reserve judgement untill I see exactly how this system is organised.

Its a fair point - but there are a few things that should pretty much stop this being a problem...1. you have to pay a monthly subscription and there is no free demo. This means most of the people online should be at least halfway serious about it.
2. the safety rating, iRating and license system keep people of similar abilities (and safety!) racing together. Any griefers quickly get to race only with other griefers...
3. You don't directly choose who to race against - so unless you're 'friends' with people in the service you're unlikely to see the same person too often.
I've only done 10 or so races so far and not found it a problem at all; there are plenty of people who aren't very good (me being one of them!!), but I've not seen anyone yet doing anything deliberately bad.
And, I should add, not a single turn 1 pileup!
