Those that had their hesitations about the upcoming Call of Duty may have their fears confirmed by this month's OXM (UK) magazine. The magazine reveals Call of Duty: World at War, which is developed by CoD2 vets Treyarch ... and once again takes place in WWII.

The critically acclaimed Call of Duty 4 was developed by Infinity Ward, and took place in the present day. The dark story and compelling multiplayer made it one of the best offerings of last year (and PS3 Fanboy's Game of the Year). Treyarch plans on "explor[ing] the darkest corners of WWII," by "tackling darker themes" and pitting players against a "new, seemingly alien fighting force." (The Chimera, perhaps?).

heres more from maxconsole.net

Call of Duty: World at War will utilise the Call of Duty 4 engine but the developer has also added various enhancments, such as the ability the burn down buildings and foliage. The game takes place primarily in the pacific, with the US forces fighting Imperial Japan. Frank Kearsy, military advisor and Gulf War Veteran, has made sure that the way the Japanse fight is both tenacious and shocking.

You’ll also be fighting as the Russians, who are invading Germany. With the Nazi forces on the back foot they will start fighting even more ferociously in an attempt to defend their strongholds such as in Berlin. There is also a new party system that will allow the leader to issue commands to his troops in single player.

Mutliplayer perks are also back, including some of the favorites from Call of Duty 4, but there will also be new ones that better suit the time period. The game also features new weapons for the series, such as the flamethrower, which according to OXM, can melt the skin off of your enemies and set ablaze grass and wooden buildings. You are also able to shoot throw materials depending on the strength of the material.

as much as COD4 was impressive and a refreshing setting WW2 has so much going for it, and it's nice to see some new approaches rather than just D-Day onwards, ok so sometimes you have to pick battles that were not a total victory for the allies but thats not really a problem
the pacific war is never really covered, there was MOH pacific assault which was pretty good but that was a while ago now.

there are many battles & events that have never been properly covered;
The lead up to Dunkirk and the occupation of france (perhaps also some risistance missions would be good)
Burma and Indochina
Italy & Sicily
various Commando raids (St Nazire perhaps)

The Commando games on PC, whilst 3rd person strategy puzzlers did a good job of covering some of the theatres you've mentioned there.

Sounds Good, we have gone as far as we can with modern weapons, just translate what Cod4 offers in to WW2 with the same multiplayer and multiplayer incentives and will be excellent.

And a flame thrower sounds like fun! Flame out those pesky campers who just plot up in a room... not naming any names but you know who you are!!

I'm not sure that white flag waving would be much fun as a game mode though? hehe

I'd really like a Vietnam based FPS, would give a very different feel to other games and have plenty of scope for missions: Jungle, villages, PBR, DMZ, Heli-borne assults, firebase defence, covert ops, tunnels, etc, etc. Not that I dislike WW2 or 'War on Terror' based ones, just think that Vietnam would be an excellent setting and not many have done it before.

There were loads of Vietnam games a few years back, so much so that it got saturated like the WW2 genre.

Battlefield Vietnam
Vietcong, Vietcong 2...
Conflict Vietnam
Shellshock: Nam '67
Medal of Honor: Vietnam
Men of Valor

All released within the space of about 3 years.

I've often though this theatre would be good. WWII is great, but in some ways it has been done to death. I'd love to see Call of Duty X: Vietnam smile

I don't reckon this will sell as much as COD4, Infinity Ward done a really good job, but i think WWII games have had their moment.

Could be set up so you have 30 seconds to get your tank into reverse before the shooting starts!

Yep, COD3 was poor. They included the vehicles to be a little like battlefield but they added nothing to the game. Also the guns were unbalanced between the allies and germans. The germans lacked a garand type semi auto rifle which was by far the best weapon in the gane.

I was disapointed to hear this. I have all the previous CODs and 4 is without a doubt far superior.

It's become boring now - I was playing MOH 6-7 years ago, and I really fail to see what yet another WW2 game will achieve

So does anyone know why it's gone back to Treyarch (sp)? I mean they are widely acknowledged as having made the worst COD title to date, so why would it go back to them for the next instalment when infinity ward have done so well with the other games??

It's a shame there aren't any games with stuff like the Falklands conflict etc.

I had a crazy idea for a game a while ago, which was something along the lines of three seperate games that could connect to the same theatre server, so you could have a well simulated air force, a well simulated land based force (infantry/tank battalions etc) and a well simulated naval force.

The upshot would be that the war would be going all the time - you'd have manned squadrons of jets flying overhead as you stormed the battlefield etc.

Bit of a pipe dream, especially as you can get games such as Battlefield and the like, which have multiple choice in a single game, but I think it would have given people the opportunity to specialise rather than get to a stage where you have a multiplayer game full of chopper campers or tank campers!
