Track-ir, what a brilliant bit of kit for PC simmers
Discussion
I've being an avid geek of Microsoft flight-simulator for more years than I care to remember, I'm not very good at FS but one product that has made me much more proficient within days is a product called track-ir 4.
It basically puts your head in the game, I've only had the product a few days and the amount of difference it makes to flying & what you didn't see and now do is absolutely amazing.
I just started using it on Nascar 2003/7 and Rfactor and wow your in the game.
It's quite expensive £120ish; I hummed & harr'd about getting one for at least 6 months, the minute I tried it I knew it was worth it.
I have no interest in the company or the product, but its one of the most WOW products I've ever bought.
Yes it's geeky, but it works.
Anyone else use it?
have a look a youtube for samples

Yep, they've been around a while but they are pretty good. We have a few at work, and if we can find the time we try to implement support for it in our PC racing titles. It was implemented in DiRT, but I can't recall whether the support has made it into GRID (which is out in a week or two).
I don't think there is a large user base out there, but it's very simple to put into your game so it's a shame more people aren't doing it. I think it's the kind of feature that often "misses the cut" in the race to hit the release date.

I noted on their website that a proficient game coder could and have implemented the code within an hour.
I'd be surprised if xbox/ps3/wii didn't try to implement it into there consoles/games.
To me it really is as revolutionary as the wii controller.

What does it do then?
A little infra red webcam sits on top of your monitor, and you stick a white spot to your glasses or forehead, or wear a little cap with a reflective spot on. The webcam tracks your head movements and translates them into the game. Obviously the movements are exaggerated, but if you glance 20 or 30 degrees to the left, keeping your eyes on the screen, the onscreen viewpoint can be calibrated to look right over your shoulder.Makes keeping track of enemies in flight sims a doddle. Check out the youtube link to see it in action.

I would be surprised to see it make an appearance on the consoles you mention. There's a lot of hoop-jumping to be done (on the legal side) to get a 3rd party peripheral supported on the current swathe of consoles.I'd be surprised if xbox/ps3/wii didn't try to implement it into there consoles/games.

Apparently they've sold 10's of thousands of the units, if that's to be believed not a bad little business they've got themselves.
