Hmm the cynical side of me wonders if they withhold some knowledge which leads to an easy increase in sales a few years down the line when they reveal the slim version. It could be that they work very hard to develop new techniques after they've brought a console out (I'd be interested to know).

They shrunk the main cpu down quite a bit apparently, so it won't need as big a cooling system. Most of the inside of the ps3 is cooling.

It's basically a given that they will downsize it at some point. I really think this is the year of the PS3 TBH.

I can't see a slim model being released this year.

The benefit from shrinking fab processes seem to be getting smaller so I would assume any great reduction in the size of the PS3 would have to wait until both the Cell and RSX are on 45nm processes, unless Sony are going to use an external PSU brick like the XBox.

I think I read IBM are starting 45nm Cell production now but RSX is still 90nm at the moment AFAIK.

Having just spent a couple of hours trying to buy the 80Gb model over here, only to find everyone is out and has discontinued it, I suspect that there is going to be an anouncement at the Game Developer Conference next week. Whether it'll be a slim'n'lite version, or just a version with a larger HDD (which would fit in nicely with the TV tuner they're bringing out) is another matter.
I'd prefer a bigger HDD over a slim version.

im unsure how slim if this is true as the hardware inside etc will take up some space as theres alot of stuff to fit in plus theres already being 5 models in gig size, 20 - 40 - 60 - 80 - 120gig

All of those hard drives are EXACLTY the same physical size.

They wont release this in the coming year, its a rebrand and a relaunch technique and they shouldnt be doing it in the next year or two I shouldnt think.

After the re-size comes the colours ect..
