xbox live router problem

Hi All,

Apologies first - cross posted this into the computer forum also.

Rcently had virgin cable broadband set up which runs into the lounge where the xbox and tv is.

PC is upstairs so bought a wireless router to get that online also.

Now when i'm playing online on the xbox - COD4 - I keep getting cannot connect to host errors.

this seems to happen mainly when invited to a party game.

The xbox is plugged into the router and the router into the modem. The pc upstairs runs from a wireless usb thingy.

If i unplug the router and plug the modem directly into the xbox i don't seem to have any problems but obv that prevents both the pc and the xbox being online at the same time.

the router is a SMC NETWORS BARRICADE N ROUTER.

Anyone shed any light on how to solve this problem?

oh i checked my system settings and the on most peopel seem to be compared about nac(??) is set to open.

Had the same problem for a year or so until I realised how to fix it, very frustrating.

Problems i encountered:

1. Could not chat to friends
2. Could not join games
3. Could not accept invites etc

Make sure the NAT settings for the router are set to open, that'll sort it.

Put your 360' in the DMZ

agree with above, also log onto the router itself and check what clients it thinks it has, usually in IE/FF and 192.168.1.1 but could be different..

i thought i was all techno savvy - apparently things have moved on!

Thought this was specific to COD4, where you try to join an existing game and this error comes up constantly, if they setup a new game, or you start one yourself then the problem disappears.

no i've tried this. it can be a completly new party started by either myself or a friend and we are still having the problem.

Did you or your friend make sure you were in your own parties before trying to join ? Boot game, multiplayer, Xbox Live. This puts you in your own lobby, then accept your friends invite. This is a known issue.

On the xbox goto network setting and ensure NAT is set to open. you may have to make some changes to your router as NAT can be tempremental on some routers , which make and model have you got ?

Hi All,

This porblme is still happening.

Router is an SMC NETWORS BARRICADE N ROUTER. NAC is set to open.

Tried just going to new game lobby etc and then inviting. still no joy.

emailed tech support for xbox and live still no good.

The steps are...

1. give your 360 a static IP and copy across the network details from you routers admin page - see here http://portforward.com/networking/staticip-xbox360...
2. On your router's admin pages, find the DMZ setup page, add the IP address you've set your 360 to to the DMZ. If the admin interface is the same as the one here - http://www.scribd.com/doc/376135/Barricade-Hope-Us... it appears that you can set up the DMZ under the firewall tab.

Hope that helps. I found I have fewer connection problems with the 360 in the DMZ than when I was port forwarding.

well i've narrowed the problem down.

it is def somethign to do with the router as if i plug the 360 direct into the modem it works fine no probs and i can accept friends games. however i need to go through the router.

the problem only effects friends games not random ones. i can;t accept or send invites for some reason.

will this dmz thing sort this out?

What you describe is the sort of thing that chucking it into a DMZ usually fixes - voice, invites, etc appear to be what xbl struggles with if portforwarding/dmz aren't just so.
