Can someone expalin multiplayer gaming?-can i network play from a installed game with CD in my drive ?- or who do i join (free?) for multiplayer gaming - but do i then need to install the game from the website?- or any other fancy software?
I have tried network play from a installed game but in 75% of times get stuck behind firewall(carmageddon always works , GTA always fails) - even though i have allowed permissions

Are we talking PC games ?

If yes then in most cases you need to buy the original disc to install the software. Depending on the game there will be different methods of finding other players, back when i used to play Quake we used to use AllSeeingEye or GameSpy to find matches, some games may even have their own inbuilt matchmaking systems.

What kind of firewall are you running ?

Most modern games I play tend to have the multiplayer interface through the game itself. Sometimes they use a 3rd party such as Gamespy to facilitate this which may require some sort of registration (username, password etc) - this is always pretty self explanatory in the game & shouldn't present a problem.
Some games (counterstrike, battlefield 2, call of duty etc) work on a many client to one server basis in that every player connects to a server to play a game. Usually in this case you need to ensure that your software firewall on your PC & any hardware type firewall (in your router for example) has the required port(s) open in order to connect to the server. Some other games (Civilisation 4, Company of Heroes...) play in a peer to peer mechanism. In that each player will need to connect to one another. In this case it is possible that your setup is configured correctly but one of the other players isn't & the result is you can't connect. Perhaps this is your problem?
I would say double check both your PC firewall & that your router has the right ports forwarded. Then check online forums or others having similar problems with the game in question.

It was sygate but now i'm on Windows firewall.- dunno how good/bad each is for gaming?
yes was on about PC games- but wondering whether those 3d type of games could be played online without installation /download or pc disc?(basically i'm looking for a website that has high graphics online games rather than the very basic 2d ones

shouldn't make any difference - so long as you open the correct ports needed by the game then it'll be fine.

not really that i can think of.... most of the 2D games you play through websites tend to be flash games - i.e they use the flash player & are effectively controllable animations/presentations. Whereas the high quality 3D type games that you buy would tend to be a bespoke piece of software which uses a software interface like Direct X or OpenGL to do realtime rendering with your graphics card.
You might find some basic games embedded into webpages which use a similar approach but you aren't going to find something like the commercial titles that you would buy in a shop.
