So I bought a PS3 and am struggling to find a game I can get in to. I've got COD4 which is a bit scripted, and about another 4, all of which just dont hold my attention. So what i'm after is a mindless shooter. I dont have the patience to invest years of my life on game, just want a bit of fun for 30mins every so often.

Any ideas?

The PS3 badly needs something like Dead Rising, we have Assassins Creed, Drakes Fortune (both really good games, but not good enough to justify the €399 we spent on the console, especially when we have a 8800 GTX equipped PC under the TV too!), and we bought Resistance Fall of Man with the console - after playing the likes of Crysis/Bioshock etc on the PC, I was disappointed, but the sprogs like the online element.

I felt the same, Motorstorm is pretty good as is COD3 and 4.

I was getting bored with the thing as i am more into strategy stuff on the PC. However... for the first time I tried playing online as until then I thought it would be difficult to set up and a bit geeky, but it literally changes the playability of all of these games.

When I got COD4 I played online for ages until I did the one-player game. Just had a blast online now. I think it is pretty much the best game you can pick up for 30 minutes and have a blast there is!

COD4 really needs to be played online, the single player lacks any depth or longevity.

I've played a number of the demos and found most of them really disappointing. The Darkess was dreadful. F1 was average, it wasn't bad it just wouldn't warrant £40. Biggest disappointment so far though has to be Turok. I was looking forward to playing the demo for ages and it was all a bit "meh". It looks great, and so it should using an ID engine, but it didn't make think I have to get this when it comes out.

Ridge Racer 7 was a bit pants as well, as was Fifa 08, NBA 2K8, NHL 08, The Club and that 3rd person gangster one whose name escapes me.

I think the problem with modern games is they all look and sound stunning, but are lacking in game play. I really don't care that much about graphics. Take Fifa or PES for example, yes you could probably pull of a vast array of moves with and without the ball, but I don't want to have to spend weeks learning moves, just give me dribble, shoot, pass and tackle. I still prefer the old Fifa 2002 over any of the modern versions. The same goes for most of the older EA Sports titles.

I guess what I really want is a PS3 version of the original Mario or Sonic games hehe

Drakes Fortune is very good, but I have read that it is a pretty small game as well frown

The only other game which has been decent enough on the demo was Devil May Cry 4, but the loading times are dreadful. I don't know if the full game will be any better, but to play a section of the game for 30 seconds then wait 10 seconds for it to load when you go through a door only to run down a corridor for 3 seconds to the next door, and another 10 seconds of loading!!! surely this is down to bad coding on the developers part, the PS3 shouldn't need such appalling in game loading times!

Try "Resistance Fall of Men". I think it is a great shoot'em up.
Good on-line action too.

I second that.

I played that loads before I got into COD 'full time'! I thought the one-player game was a lot longer and more detailed than either of the CODs.

Agree with all that. I guess the onlt good thing is on the Playstation store you can download and play the demos before chucking £40 or £50 on a game. I am with you, gameplay is everything. Bring back Sensible Soccer I say!

NHL I thought would be good as I have had about 4 of them before, but I was surprisingly bored with it. The unexpected purchase I really liked was Virtua Tennis. Never had a tennis game before, but the career mode of that is a really good and compelling. As well as playing games to increase your ranking, you play a choice of some very fun side-games to increase your skills. Great fun, and the £40 probably gave be a good 30 hours of fun until I was world no 1, as which time the game is pretty much 'completed' i guess.

Yeah, you're right. Then after that don't bother with online forums then we are all sorted! smile

Have you heard of Warhawk?

It's a great game, 3D person sytle shooter, similar in style to the Battlefield games on the PC.

It's on-line only but very good fun, there are jeeps, Tanks, Warhawks (planes) and of course wandering round on foot with an RPG hehe

Best thing it's only a £20 download or you can buy it for about £30 from an online retailer with a wireless headset.

EDIT:

Also Uncharted is amazing (and not that short) but also has platform elements too.

I'd agree with what others have said and get into COD4 online. I prefer RPG's to shooters but I've become addicted to the online aspect of COD4, I think the levelling up aspect appeals to me. smile

Drake's Fortune isn't as short as some people seem to think but then obviously its not going to be as long as something like Oblivion. smile

I'd also recommend Warhawk, bloody great game, every time I put it on I lose a couple of hours.

Had Burnout since Thursday. Got to say it took a while until I got used to the scale of it but oh my god its good. It has so much depth when you get into it, things like each road having its own online score for best showtime or quickest time to drive the road, Its also all done without any loading times or gaps in game play.

Spent this evening trying the online out with a couple of mates. The racing is great, I like the way you can set your own race up to start and finish anywhere on the map with as many added checkpoints as you like.

I'd recommend it, the demo didn't do it justice.

+1. I spend way too much time on Warhawk!
We have Assassin's Creed which I also enjoyed, but it was a bit repetitive and the ending was appalling (I had to look online to see whether it really was the ending or not). Don't think I'll buy the sequel.

Resistance: Fall of Man is good - although I can only finish it in co-op mode because I'm useless at it (and you don't get the bonus extras in co-op mode frown )

Ratchet and Clank. Makes the cost of the console worthwhile...
