Probably best to wait for a UK one to appear. Don't know much about HD-DVD, but as it's an external unit I'm guessing power supply/plug might be an issue. Not sure if HD-DVD is region coded but I'd assume so and knowing Microsoft I'd also expect the US HD-DVD player and the EU XB360 to not talk to each other or reduce it's features... but that's because I don't trust Microsoft
They've got them on the shelves at my local virgin, however bluray is currently outselling hddvd 2:1 and rising so i'd wait and see which wins the format war.
It dosen't use a different power supply it plugs straight into the usb at the back and you can mount the wireless adaptor onto it as well.

I bought one from my local Blockbuster the other day. It's great and relatively cheap. I don't want to undermine it, but you just accept that the HD resolution is the normal and you take it a bit for granted.
It is impressive though.
AFAIK, the problem is that some studios are distributing via Blu Ray and some others HD. There's no overlap.

The place to buy HD-DVDs at the moment in my experience is Amazon.com. Including postage I picked up 2 recently for £12.50 each. They also seem quicker than the UK amazon site, who don't tend to have many in stock.

Personally... I want to make bloody sure of that before I splashed the cash, backwards compatibility vanishing in a puff of vaporware is the norm. But considering this is a games console it's a bit moot. I'm just wondering what games require the HD-DVD unit to be honest as that's a hell of a lot of storage space.

None of the games require the hddvd unit, microsoft have said that they are not going to allow games to be published on hddvd nor will they ever have one built in to the console to enable consumers to have more choice. This means that 360 games are stuck with 9gb dvds and with all the compression techiques in the world that still means short games with amazing graphics eg GOW (which could be an advantage due to the busy lives people lead) or games on multiple discs which they are reluctant to do. The only other option would be longer games with downgraded graphics which would not be tolerated.
The American Pron industry has taken HD DVD under its wing already aparently, Favouring it over Blue Ray, so i think that is a good indication HD DVD is here to stay for a long while. Sounds an odd thing to say but the adult entertainment industry is worth so much they really do have clout, with billions to back it up. Helped VHS out IIRC

I've got a US one - $200 - no reason to get a UK one - all the same.
HD-DVD's are region free at the moment so can buy wherever you want online.
Picked up the HD-DVD drive from Argos as it's only £120 there, and have it hooked up to my new 40" Sony 1080p panel and it looks amazing.
Unfortunately most TV's only support 1080p over HDMI, so I've tried both the component cable at 1080i and the VGA cable to hook it up to my TV and 1080i looks better than 720p.
I've got a FullHD TV though, with 1080 lines of pixels, so you get a like for like pixel reproduction, rather than having 720p stretched.
As for HD-DVD's. Most still use 2:3 pulldown, so the difference between 1080p and 1080i is negligible.
If you've got a big, HD-TV then it's worth every penny, but get some decent surround sound too.

Given the audio problems with the HD addon if you have a decent surround system it may be worth paying out for a better HD-DVD player.
Or waiting for the next Xbox update which supposedly fixes the audio sync issues.
