Looks like iracing had a major update to their site this week. Check out www.iracing.com/

Looks cool. An accurately laser mapped silverstone should be nice!

Good pedigree there, indy500 through GPL to nr2003, all ground breaking. Looks like its going to be a massively multiplayer online racing sim.

Saw this site ages ago but not really heard much about what there doing.

IIRC it's basically the guys from Papyrus, so I'm guessing the multiplayer element is going to be excellent after what the did with Nascar.

Look forward to seeing this one in the near future. Anyone know when it's due to be released and what racing/cars/tracks its going to offer?

Wow, its been a while since i posted about this (its been in development for ages it seems).

iRacing have posted some new screen shots from their forthcoming racing sim, over at http://www.iracing.com

So far theyve shown pics from several different types of cars and tracks, and i read a quote from Dale Earnhardt Jr (current NASCAR driver) that said:

Ive been on the beta team for nearly a year. I cant give you much info, those guys are keeping us pretty tight on what knowledge of the game gets out. It will be released, when...I would guess first halph of 08. It is badass. Trust me on that.

There is a TON of testing going on to make sure that all the issues and bugs are handled. The game looks and feels amazing. Everything is dead on.

They have lost a lot of respect in the sim-gaming community and recently going after ASR (Arca Sim Racing) just puts somore more icing on the stale cake for me.

I've been keeping an eye on this one too, but everything seems very quiet at the moment, they're not giving anything away!

The Sim Factory have been falling over themselves with release dates, and they have not said that iracing are behind their latest release slip.

If anything i think iracing will unify a massively fragmented "community" that exists at present.

The limited launch is this month, with invites out now from the beta testers.

I own nkp, rf etc, and id say that iracing is the most realistic piece of software ive used to date. I used to race formula fords and have raced at the silverstone track they have modelled, and the laser scanned track they have is spot on. Im told by some of the american testers that the american tracks are all as good as it gets too.

I have a background in league racing, so thought that the iracing scheduling would be a bit strange, but it offers the advantages of competing in a league environment with the flexibility of being able to race whenever you want (on the hour at present with a limited amount of testers).

There are other racing sims on the market now, and they all offer something different (lfs is nice, rfactor is cool, nkp goes to town with its gearbox modelling! biggrin ), but as a complete package that offers ease of use as well as state of the art physics and car and track modelling, nothing comes close to what iracing is offering now (there is a laser scanned track available now as a proof of concept kind of thing, and its nice, but its not as detailed as the tracks are in iracing - itll suprise a lot of people when they take out something like the rt2000 single seater).

The cars and tracks may have an american bias (although the fastest road car in there at the moment is a Radical SR8), but they are fun to race. If youre looking for a nascar sim, a WTCC or an F1 sim, this isnt it. You have to work your way up a ladder, so its aimed at everyone from the novice to the old hand (the latter will rise up to the quicker cars pretty quickly) - you cant jump straight into the radical or the mad as a hatter USAC silver crown car (800bhp+ in a tubular steel cage with wheels).

So its not going to be for everyone, but the racing is clean (there are penalties for running off track, running into cars or walls, breaking rules etc), and the simulation aspect of it is phenominal.

No nicknames either - you have to use your real name.

I couldn't give an arse, and neither can many in the racing community.

A yearly subscription, extra fees for extra cars and tracks. No AI. Give me a break.

The fees and payment system puts me off instantly.

I dont mind paying out £30+ for a great game, but paying out every month and having to pay for extra cars and tracks is rubbish.

at risk of being the odd one out, I'd be well up for this - even with a subscription pricing model smile

I'm not stunningly good at rf, but really am using it to learn what I can in preparation for taking the plunge in real live (got my race license last year).

iracing seems to promise to do exactly what I want; uber-realistic sim-racing, against people not AI.

The only downside I see is the lack of [UK] tracks - which is exactly where rfactor excels.

Hmmm, interesting.

If i had more time i would definitely invest, i have no problem with the subscription idea (beats the crap out of paying for WoW... eww!), and the range of cars and tracks should diversify.

I really don't like oval racing, at all. If only i could pay a little more per month to never let that content touch my HDD... tongue out

Alex, any chance i could get an invite?wink

Edit: Never mind, i'm in. smile

Iracing is a disgrace and will fail imho, the pricing is disgusting and people will not pay, servers will be empty for the expensive stuff and when free Rfactor2 and its wonderful free mods comes out it will fade in to nothing.

Pricing - $159 for a year BASIC!!!

If you want all the cars and tracks it is $250 on top of that!!!

I really want to see them fall flat on their face, Iracing - Labour of the Sim world

Either go karting or buy a shed, alot more worth it.

Well here in Newport, its 40 quid for a session of indoor, 4stroke slow as molasses karting, so id get 2 sessions for the price of an annual iRacing subscription.

iRacing offers something different to rFactor. One is designed to let you create and run your own vehicles, the other is a complete structured racing system. They both have pros and cons, it depends on what you want out of your racing simulation.

Dont forget also that the subscription goes to regular updates. This is a product that will continuously be refined, and update itself seamlessly.

Its a new approach, and wont be to everyones tastes, but the simulation is second to none.

LFS updated itself, as did Rfactor on a regular basis for no cost. I do not see how they can have the cheek to charge such a large amount of money per year for what basically is a game, laser tracks or not, all will be using that technology soon but not for an extortionate fee, an annual fee at that. I had high hopes for it, but there is no way in hell i will be spending essentially £200 per year on a computer game.

The community basis itself on other peoples talent providing their pride and joy, hard work and love for free. GPL was great, but it was cheap, it got Pappy where they are today, and they turn around after the sim was kept alive for years for free by community developers and slap them with a yearly bill of 200 sheets.

VLM make some of the best and most accurate mods around, they do not even charge for their many years hard work, PTC was incredible, 208 cars in the end, their Lemans tracks in different forms as well will be the best there is, easily on Par with Sim bins and rfactors mods, that is where the respect lies.

After 2 years and 400 squid you don't even own the bloody game!!! you cannot play if it your internet goes down, jeez it seems like the con of the year, Next years budget i expect Bushy Brows to introduce Ipolitician, followed by INHS and Ispeeding.

It's just not cricket.

Laser tracks are making an appearance in rFactor. Easter Creek has been done, more to come and free to download as always.

Spent 3 hours looking at Iracing, then got dragged back to bring back memories of GPL, LFS and now rFactor after downsizing to a one bed flat and the PC going...

IMO it looks good, what I would expect from the next generation of sims but it fails in my mind for the simple reason of pricing. Who wants a web based subscription game that you rent FFS?!

Real shame. Papyrus look to me like they have put something good together. I dont have much time to sim race and that always was a niggle with rFactor - I seemed to spend more time downloading and patching than actually racing. I'm sure it could work (and FWD will tell me!) quite easily but I like the idea of Iracing making the package more "complete" and I would pay a premium (£40?) for this, but not a bloody sub!

So if the forums that I have been reading are correct and this is a no goer, why ae they going ahead? Surely they read the same forums? Maybe the steep costs work out if you aim for the 5% of the sim market maybe? Interesting if it doesnt take off what will happen, empty rooms with angry people on 1 year deals....?

Right, off to see if I still have Indycar Racing on CD...hehe

Thats exactly why I wouldnt buy it, you might end up paying out to play on a server on your own. I dont see how they can build a large community in this way. Even the most popular PC racers have small numbers of people online compared to WOW or other subscription games.

They have plenty of time before the game is released for them to change there minds on the pricing, or at least ajust the pricing.
If it was £30 to buy the game and then £1 a month subscription then I wouldnt mind as much.

There are 1000 beta testers now (up from 300 last month). Each beta tester has been given 10 invitations to the service, so its growing in the same manner as gmail. As it stands, the UK evening races are generally pretty busy (if 10 drivers show up at 8pm in the same series they all go into the same race. If 10000 drivers show up enough server instances are started to allow 10 per race, and drivers are sorted based on location and irating).
