i got one for Christmas too, very worthwhile if you make sure firmware is 2.0 or below (not2.01) and put an emulator on, i have over 40 games for free now

Got my son one for xmas, he loves it! So far he's never put it down long enough for me to have a play of it.

Just figured out how to put my DVD's on it so that'll come in handy.

Hi guys. Why not 2.01? (out of interest) also, what is an emulator?

It allows you to run downloaded games for other types of consoles on it eg SNES games. Sony is getting clever about this and some of the newer games will not run unless you upgrade the firmware. Later versions also come with MP3 support, RSS channels and WPA wireless security so there are good reasons for upgrading. There is a downgrader available but it does have problems and could turn your lovely console in to a black brick...

Latest firmware version on the web is 2.6

I bought my son a Jap import 2.01 version for xmas. I was sold on the higher res screen. It seems to be working ok, but have i dropped the preverbal bollock?? Would be interested to hear opinions.

I've got a jap one as well and was running the emulators. I got given NFS Most wanted for xmas and it forced me to upgrade to the new firmware. I'm not too bothered to be honest as the emulators were a bit flaky anyway. No doubt there will be a reliable downgrade at some point but i'm not going to rush and downgrade again.

Also - the better screen thing also sold the jap one to me but having not seen a UK one i cant say if that was bullshit or if there is an visable difference between region models.

So are the homebrew games etc now working on ver 2.0? My kids have 2 PSP's both ver 2.0, I can downgrade to 1.5 but some of the games will only run on 2.0 or above and the Interenet browser (FWIW) is only on 2.0 +

If so where can I get the appropriate software?

Everywhere around here had them in stock yesterday.

If you want to play emulated games then you need one which you can downgrade. However, it won't let you play new games as well, as that requires you to re-upgrade. Given how scary downgrading is, it isn't something I could recommend doing more than once.

Best solution is to get two, one in standard mode which you upgrade as appropriate and one which is fully downgraded which you can fiddle around with.

If you are going to downgrade it, make sure you are very, very careful in which software you use to do it, as some of it will just turn your PSP into a brick which you can never return to working condition.

I can't tell the difference between a Jap and UK screen, so wouldn't let that overly worry you.
