Hardly a shock is it?

Cracking is the electronic equivalent of doing the Times crossword.

Mental muscle flexing if you will, it was always going to happen.

It means that they can get cheap software...

Its a bit like chipping a Playstation so it can play burned CDs/DVDs

"He said that hardware on the system only allows Microsoft certified and signed programs to run on the console. Copied games would not be recognised by the system and would not run."

In other words, once 'cracked', you can run illegal game copies - not great for Microsoft revenues

It has not been hacked! The PI group have managed to work out the filesystem format of the DVDs the system uses. They have not managed to create a mod-chip. They cannot run their own code or backup disks. They have not even decrypted the content of the disks (they can extract the files but they are still encrypted).

This is the first step (and probably the easiest by a long way) on a long road to actually getting these machines to boot backed up disks (or even Linux for media centre duties).

Essentially.

MS lose effectively. Theres not much margin in the hardware and their star developer, they own.

I'll buy one as soon as they are!

You'd think the bright minds at MS would make it nigh on impossible though...wouldn't you?
What reason could there be, if any, for them leaving it open to being chipped?

Basically if you can read the data off it to play the game you can read the data off it to copy it.

I recon that sometimes this information is sneaked out of the backdoor? Remember the near death of the Gamecube due to the odd disk sizes and the XBOX was losing the war against the PS2 until "someone" found a way round it.

Modded systems wont be able to access the live network. Unless that issue is also sorted out, given the appeal of live play, a chipped machine will only appeal to a limited few.

yes the Xbox 360 has been hacked using an external USB storage device.

in the vid they are using a psp (cool) there are a few people who how to do this but with MS suing modders of xbox at the moment I think they will be keeping their heads low and not shouting about this too much just yet

Edit - one of the guys in our creative dept says there is a cut in the video just after the rewritable disk is inserted into the machine. . . . . . mabe not so real afterall, make your own minds up.

Once MS know exactly what the hack is they will scan for it on live and disable your hacked xbox.

if you watch the video there is no cut out, so yes the vid looks like it may have been cut when they put the CD into the box but there is no cut when they eject the rewritable media . . . . . . . im still sitting on the fence but its clever how they have done the video if its not one of the rumoured hacks
