OK so I bought a Nintendo DS for one of the kids for Christmas. Just looking (playing) at it and see there's a slot for a Game card?

Wossat then? I'm guessing it's some kind of memory card? do I need one to use the thing, or is it something optional or for certain games etc?

The DS can play all the old GB, GBC and GBA games, however DS specific games come of a game car format rather than the old cartridges which havent changed much since the days of the first original gameboy.

Its what the games come on :P

Aah, so the DS games are on a smaller cartridge, I thought the games were like the Gameboy SP games. I tried an SP game and it goes in the conventional looking slot.

Another thing the old Gameboy colour (and older) games won't fit in the game slot (they have a different shape at the plug) and the manual says that it will not play gameboy and gameboy colour games - yet I thought it would! looking at the older game cartridges they could be 'modified' to fit (with a small file) would they work - fitment aside? I ask because we've got loads of old games and it would be good if they were usable on the new machine.

Many Thanks.

I think the answer to your second question re original games is no, they won't work. GB Advance games only.

Yes that is what it says in the manual and the older ones simply don't fit in the slot - but I could 'make' them fit, but wouldn't want to try this if it might damage the DS.

Sorry guys, I was under the impression it would play the GB and GBC games. Damn thats a shame, might be forced not to get a DS over that one...

I'll have a look on some of the modding sites, but I think that even with cartridge adjustments a la Megadrive, it isn't possible

Maybe not, FYI this pic shows the different shape of the cartridge; yellow is GameBoy Colour/original and black is GameBoy Advance, it would be easy enough to cut a section out of the cartridge at the left and right so that the cartridge inserts into the machine, But would it work??.
