Ive never needed and never actually set up a network before

I wont bother with the £70 wireless adapter.

How hard is it to set up a network, and if I pop into dixons/comet/currys or somewhere tomorrow:
1) Whats the single easiest to set up most system/driver friendly network thingy
2) What "thingy" do I need? Im sure I read you need a router. Will I need to reconfigure my net access on the PC before plugging it into the xbox 360, and does anyone have time to share an indepth explanation of what needs to be done, and how it all works? (and which pieces of kit to buy, etc)

I think this is correct, With a laptop. You just connect computer to Xbox with ethernet cable (which is included in full package) and Bob is your uncle. This will require you to have a computer in the same room as the xbox and to have the computer on whilst your on x box live. Otherwise i guess you will need a router and stuff ? Over to somebody who really understands...

Just noticed that game are selling 10 meter long ethernet cables which might help you manage without a router.

You either need a crossover cable (I would have thought, maybe autosensing but I cant see it) to connect the Xbox to the PC or you just cable it straight into a ADSL Modem/Switch combo.

I dont have a plug on the modem for anything, just phone in USB out.

Will just plain ethernet card do the trick, then? Not sure what to ask for at the computer shop, and dont suspect they'll know much about xbox's either.

Yeah, you need an ethernet port in the computer (either on the mobo already or buy an ethernet card) and a cross over cable

If you go via the ethernet card/crossover cable, you'll need to set up Internet Connection Sharing - apparently a doddle on XP, but a complete nightmare on ME/98 etc. That's why I got a router.
Got a new PC since, with XP, but I still use the router, because going via the pc requires that the pc be on whilst you're on live.

I would recommend getting a router like this....

www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=311B&SearchType=1&CategorySelectedId=11177&SearchTerms=adsl+router&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=11177

It should give you far less aggro in the long run than internet sharing thro' a laptop.

Update: There is a large rectangular like jack on the motherboard, at the back of my PC which says LAN. Could this be an ethernet plug? Meaning Id just need a cross over cable (this is the route I want to take)

The xbox 360 comes with a cable, is it a cross over cable?

When Ive plugged the two together (at about 1am tomorrow morning ) what exactly do I need to do with XP to get the two networked together. Im sure Ive seen network settings somewhere, hopefully it wont be too hard to network the two?

Start>Help>Internet Connection Sharing

or

Google for XP Internet Connection Sharing.

Its easy to set up, just follow the prompts.

If it comes with a network cable, it will probably be a crossover cable.
