Apologies if this has been raised already :

I think we should have a dedicated server for the PH racers, plus the people we meet online we can trust to race cleanly. Invitation only and all that...
I'm not too sure what the pricing is like but i am prepared to personally drop about a tenner in a month for our own server

Those in favour post here! Perhaps we can strike a deal with our resident website provider !!?

I'd be interested too.

A nice weekley league would be cool. The old days of GPL were something I looked forward to until my PC broke!

A very quick search found a Jolt server for £65.

See here

Assuming the Jolt server, then with 10 of us that's £6.50 each a month, i'm up for that. Any more just pushes the price down.

Yep still working on this..!

I will get back to you all on this thread. Things need to be hurried along, and I will be setting the server up mainly for GTL

Dave - will we be able to use it for the Crimbo Enduro Spectakleeeerrrrr

I have'nt heard back on the enquiries I made the other day

I'm willing to stump up £ wise for the one off event + a monthly amount for future races, I think now GTL is on the scene it's worth it

Register1 (which is run by Pistonheader Jamie Beeston) offer servers for £59 a month - less than Jolt, and it has the added bonus of supporting a fellow PH'er.

That looks quite good Dobbo...

I've emailled him.. see what can be done there....

However the other option I am working on will bne about £30 - 35 a month...
So we will see which works out the best..

Is there any sort of remote server config for GTL though? If we have a dedicated server it seems silly to have it passworded the whole time - just when we need/want it to be... That way if we want a race and no other PHers are around we could join it and have it public... other people would join.

Yes, the way that can be done is leaving it unprotected - until about an hour before one of our races..
Kick everyone out and start password protected

Had a word with Jamie and looks like the Register1 server is probably the best...

I'd say we have got about 12 people interested here..

So based on 12 people we're talking
£13 each for Month One (there is a setup fee)
£5 a Month after that..

OR if you get the three year contract
you are talking £155 each for the three years.. which would probably have to be paid upfront
Works out at £4.30 a month (ish)

Here's where it gets a bit cleverer too... I imagine more than one of us has our own website. I wonder if we could shift our hosting onto our own server, thus saving those costs. I for one have 4 hosted websites I could move

That wouldn't be fair on the non-website owners..?

Maybe have two game servers running, ie. see if there is another group of people who want a GTR server for example.

I'm happy to stump up some money - but then I wouldn't want it public. If there are no other PHers around, I'll just use one of the public servers.

I like meeting up for the odd race here and then but don't do it frequently enough to warrant paying for a server... sorry and all that but I'll pass.

s'ok dern - I don't think we are going to force anyone who uses it to pay!

(are we?)

Haha well I was thinking about doing, if people are using it weekly, or daily without paying then it would be time for a password lockdown I think otherwise it won't be fair for others..

Hmm... this is starting to become annoying!!
If BT would upgrade exchanges earlier everything would be fine!

I'm happy to contribute. I'd suggest we leave the server dedicated to GTL (or maybe GTL + GTR if we want it) rather than try and host websites etc, it's just simpler if we somehow bump up against the data transfer limits or someone's scripts on their site manage to go berserk and consume lots of CPU time / RAM etc and slow the game server down. Both pretty unlikely I know, but keeping it simple seems the best bet.

I've got no problem with leaving the server public (again data transfer withstanding) provided that everyone that is paying for it can lock it down for private races, I've got no idea what kind of remote admin GTL provides but I guess it's basic to non existant if GTR is anything to go by
