Resident Evil 4 - PS2. Is it any good?
Discussion
I loved the PS1 resident evil games, they were utterly fantastic. A great blend of light problem solving, exploration, suspense and action.
I picked up resident evil code veronica for the PS2 and was not impressed. I've played it a couple of times now and never really gotten very far. Not that it was too tough, just didnt pull me in like the others.
Fast forward to Resident Evil 4.
I've heard good things about this one, but is it really any good? Compared to the early PS1 Resident Evil games?
Worth getting?
As an aside, I loved the old PS1 Syphon Filter, Resindent Evil, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve etc - the third person explore, puzzle and shoot em kind of games.
Any of that type of game on the PS2 anyone would care to recommend?

Face it, the controls sucked balls (sweaty ones at that) in all those games bar maybe syphon filter, getting attacked by a zombie and you have to pivot on the spot 180 degrees before you can run off. The puzzle bits are still there in places but there is no more going back and forth between the same old places to perform tasks, you always feel like you're moving on into new areas. The controls are a massive improvement on the earlier games with a lot of quick actions performed with 1 button, like diving through a window or vaulting a low wall. Shooting is a joy (or was on the gamecube with the pressure sensitive trigger where you held it lightly to aim and pulled it all the way in to shoot, not sure how this works on the PS2 pad) you get laser sights now which makes kneecapping easy.
To sum up it's a lot more action-biased than the old games, the dialog is much less crap with some decent acting (on the whole...) will still make you jump and is likely to take quite a bit longer to complete than the previous games.
edit: oh and it's awesome, best Resident Evil yet.

Caveat: I've got the GameCube version.
It's absolutely bloody fantastic. Quite simply one of the best games I've played for years and years. If the PS2 version is only half as good as the GC version, it'll still blow the doors off anything else released this year.
I just spent all day yesterday round a friend's house playing REs-4 on his PS2. Great game - there's nothing as satisfying as decapitating villagers with a well placed bolt-action rifle shot. There seems to be a lot less going backwards and forwards in this one and the availability of weapons with custom upgrades makes for some important decisions when you meet up with the arms sellers. Controls can be a little frustrating at times but that's probably more me (used to keyboard and mouse gaming) rather than the joy pads.
Can't seem to straff either. But all in all a great game that has me thinking of buying a games system to run it on.

Picked up a copy of Silent Hill2 on the weekend. Now that is class :P
Very atmospheric (especially after wandering through the fog filled abandoned streets, then walking through the woods near my house - fog filled, zero vis, abandoned... lol) and great fun.
A lot more cerebral and less "shoot everything in sight" than RE series but fun nonetheless.
Especially considering the special edition Silent Hill 2 (along with the "Making of" DvD) cost me a grand total of a fiver...
RE 4 before christmas then :P Will keep my eyes peeled. I almost never buy new PS2 games (GT series and FF series excepted) as for the sake of waiting a month or so, they dop rather rapidly in price once traded in at the local games shop!
