First experience of Xbox360 today !
Discussion
I’ve spent half an hour today on a 360 and …. Well…. I’ve come away disappointed with the distinct feeling that the 360 is not quiet the next generation. More like Xbox 180.
Here's a quick rundown on the games.
Call of Duty 2 : Looks no better than the PC version. Nice particle effects and smooth framerate but it runs well on my 6800GT. Jaggies evident which is disappointing. Some of the textures on the soldiers faces were shocking. Certainly no better then Xbox.
Kameo: Elements of Power : Very colourful. Nice effects but nothing that made me go wow. Again from a few feet away could well have been an Xbox game.
King Kong : Probably the most impressive demo. Very nice graphics and particle effects but let down by shocking and I mean very bad jaggies.
So. Disappointing. I remember the first time I saw Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast and was genuinely impressed by the graphics. Or the first time I saw a 3dfx card in operation.
I’m hoping that PGR3 will be more impressive. Lets just hope that these demos were early builds of the games. I wonder what happened to Microsoft’s promise of every game having full screen AA ?
The screen was running from component and was definitely in 720p.

The software will evolve a bit though before release.
Its also a Media Centre Extender though and the value of that when the buying public grasp the concept cannot be underestimated if it turns out to be a unique offering.
Very true Matt. It will be worth having so I can stream HD content from the machine upstairs. Pluss anything that has Jeff Minters input cant be all that bad !
I have a PGR3 demo, which blew me away. Even though the frame rate (for the video) was less than the realtime render. The amount of extra detail in the city, buildings, interiors, exteriors... its more than twice that of the xbox, I believe on average there is 8-10 times more detail, polygons, smoother gameplay etc. Not sure how to take your comments, other than respectfully since you've had yer hands on, ive not.
Praps its the megapixel problem syndrome. You need 5 times more power to create double the detail, ish. I cant imagine not being blown away seeing an xbox on a decent screen. Was it really that bad?

Not that bad no but I did not leave the store thinking I cant wait to get my hand on one. I've seen it all before on my PC. I can run the laptop through the TV and it looks fantastic with games like Half Life 2.
I guess I expected more of the 360. I had been sucked in by the hype. Nothing I've seen at the moment offers anything over what I can have on the PC. Hopefully other games will utilize the 360's power. I just thougt that with 3 cores and the cutting edge of video hardware it would blow my trusty 6800GT out of the water..... All this will not however stop me buying one on the day

Trouble with consoles is that although they may be cutting edge at launch, they have to stay the same for the rest of their life. You can always upgrade your PC to the bleeding edge as & when and keep playing your old games plus buy new ones that take advantage of the new hardware...

Agree. However their is the fact that if 360 DOES live upto the hype ( eventually ) it should be at least as good as the next 2 generations of graphics cards.
Also to consider is cost. A 360 costs £279. You would be hard pressed to have a decent gaming PC for this price. My 6800GT cost £250 about 6 months ago.
i only hope that these games are that sharp as its the first batch of games to be released on the console.
By this time next year the games will be very slick and much better looking as the makers of the games would of grasps new techniques to push the box to the limits (all in my opinion)

Facts:
1) A new console comes along, always ahead of the PC, but the PC always manages to catch up (at a price, eventually)
2) Different console platforms always war it out, trying to take eachothers business
3) Consoles ALWAYS sell for 25-40% of what they origionally sold for, years down the line, boxed as new on the highstreet.
Why cant the NEXT next generation hardware skip the next generation. IE, why cant the playstation 4 come with the specs of the would be playstation 5?
The power would be massive, skipping an entire generation. Using 2-3 times more processors then the logical progression, with more pipes to deal with more data processing...
And sell them for a very small margin, making little or no working profit. And reap the rewards when the customer base doubles in size.
If PS 4 was out next year, rather than PS 3, the xbox360 would be dead in the water (another 'fact' ... surely?) And Sony PS profits would soar. (just a thought)
