Because I had it preordered on Amazon, it turned up about a fortnight ago.
I played through the game on "Lieutenant" difficulty, completing the game in around 12 hours with no cheating.
I didn't think it was as hard as Doom 3, and I didn't think the ending was as satisfying as Doom 3, but overall, it was far less repetitive and far more enjoyable; the fighting with your fellow marines, in particular, helped the sense of immersion.
The weapons are great, the graphics are fab, the voice acting (as is common in id's games of late) is superb, and the multiplayer is simplistic fun.
And it's a lot less dark than Doom 3, too.

Quake 4 and doom 3 is the ultimate Torch simulator
Have you ever played AvP 2?
That game is so hard playing as a marine, simply because you shit your pants every 2 mins!
AvP 1 was pretty good too, but AvP 2 really is an under rated game, with great multiplayer too.
OK, might not have the originality or depth to the story, the graphics are very "last" generation now with just normal textures and lighting (no fancy bump mapping and glossy reflections etc), but it's immersive enough and well made enough to not matter!
Give it a try if you haven't already. Effectively 2 games in one in AvP 2 as you play as marine, predator and alien. Even bump into yourself a few times I think as the other character if you catch my drift!

The first few levels of avp2 as marine are quite something for being scary
AVP still is IMO the scariest game I have played so far. I particularly like to play the Alien as it travels at such a fast speed it is very hard to hit. Also the fact that it can travel on the ceiling is the best feature as you can literaly run all round the room and then bite of you oponents head
We played this on the lan for over a year when it was released and I miss it. It would be interesting to load it up again (if I still had it) to compare the graphics with a modern fps, like HL2 for example. I hope they would have an add on patch where you could run round and shag Ripley but allas no such luck
Hehe, fantasy AvP
Yeah, AvP was great multiplayer. Stranded was fun, get 5 players as marines and run down the end to the bunker where aliens would spawn and run out to attack you!
Did lack some features in multiplayer though.
AvP 2 was ultimately better all round, lost some of the polish and authenticity to the first game and films though. Some of the sounds like the big fancy tracker gun were changed and lost that feeling, and some guns were added that didn't exist, but it was still damn good.
Loved the M Player where you start as a small alien, and as you live longer you grow into a bigger alien. Also a feature after so many successive kills to become a queen alien!
Being a predator was also cool, and if you head bit a predator as an alien in the species domination mode, they grew into a well hard bigger but slower alien
Classic game, loaded with features and real proper gameplay! Perfect for an evening being geeks with friends round on a LAN.
Can't say I've touched HL2 since I played it. Just so boring in comparison. Counter Strike is the only reason I really got HL2. Still find myself playing the original Day of Defeat Mod for HL1 more than anything!
Lots of modern games just lack that polish around play. Looks are nothing without it being fun and immersive for your mind and not just eye candy!
