Out today.

Anyone into these type of strategy games?
I followed the recomendations on here and bought Rise Of Nations (excellent). I'm hoping the gameplay is as good on AOEIII, the graphics look awesome.

I have the first two from a while ago - i really liked the format of the game, especially the free-form multiplayer parts.

I can't wait to get my hands on AOE3 - Rise of nations is simply the king of the genre for me (i was a big fan of the original AOE, and the star wars galactic empire spin offs).

Some very promising reviews of the game have been put up already.

Civilisation IV is also out. Which to buy? Any opinions? These types of games are great to play on a laptop.

Be careful about Civ IV because it only seems to play well on the top-spec machines, a lot of people are having major problems (have a gander here). Needless to say I cancelled my AoE order a few weeks back due to Civ IV's release and now the bloody thing won't even play on my decent computer & laptop, which is a shame because the key to Civ's success has always been its simplicity.

i'd love to have AOE 3 on my laptop - but i have to pull the CD drive for travelling (when i'd play it) to get the extra battery in...

Is there a 'version' that can run soley from the hard drive..?

There are vitual drive utilities available which can simulate a CD/DVD-ROM drive, maybe that would work?

Test it first though, some of the copy protection software is clever enough to notice, 'Rome: Total War' being a case in point.

No s**t, wasted £35 on that

(Daemon tools was the culprit) Fails on all SafeDisc V4 titles (Quake4 too included). Uninstalling the application does not fool safedisc.

There will be a 'no cd' type patch available soon enough. The exact copy protection system used will just determine how long it takes and how much of a fiddle it is to use.

Sure just install as normal, then get the fixed 'age3.exe' download and replace. It was released on the 18th.
