A bit old skool but Command And Conquer Generals with the expansion packs is a sound purchase - its dirt cheap as well now ! Plus you can run it with all the effects at max and it looks the dogs

Which Age of Empires? the original or Rise of Nations, just got RoN the other day for a couple of quid second hand even better than the first 
I tend to prefer the more realistic/historical ones compared to some of the weirder futuristic ones, but they are all basically the same engine/premise, just pick whatever your interested in.

C&C Generals and Red Alert 2 would indeed both be sound purchases. I've had all the C&C games right back to the very first GDI vs Hand of Nod game. Fine stuff indeed.
I just bought Ground Control as it was in a 2-for-£25 offer at my local games emporium. I don't know if it's any good, as I've not loaded it up yet or heard anything about it. However, it might be something else for you to consider, as it received 8.5 on GameSpot.
One to watch is Star Wars: Empire At War, but it's not released until February next year.
Going away from the traditional "military" RTS games, you might also want to try Evil Genius - it's hilarious!

I just bought Ground Control as it was in a 2-for-£25 offer at my local games emporium. I don't know if it's any good, as I've not loaded it up yet or heard anything about it. However, it might be something else for you to consider, as it received 8.5 on GameSpot.

Age of empires has a decent resource collecting part of the game but the combat is cr*p.
The Total war series uses a turn based strategy map, where you manage your empire, move troops etc, and a second tactical map. This map is a 3D environment where you armies fight the enemy. You control your army by it's various units (typically 60 men in each).
I second that, Total war, especially Rome Total War is a phenomenal game. You can pretend to be Caesar and conquer Gaul! How cool is that? Or you can be the persians and totally decimate enemy foot soldiers with massive cavalry charges (the cavalry is awesome). Or you can besiege cities and knock down their walls with trebuchets. Its wicked.

if by WW2 game you meant SuddenStrike (large scale combat), then take a look at panzers: phase 2, or at blitzkreig. both have sequels that have just come out recently.
if you meant commandos (squad level combat), then you MUST take alook at soldiers: heros of world war 2. should be out on budget by now.
also, as already suggested, rise of nations II and rome:total war seem to be the Daddies in this particular genre

Uhh, Ground Control is available as a legal free downlad now... Fantastic game let down by crap AI.
Ground Control 2 is out and is OK, it could've been fantastic if they concentrated more on infantry in an urban environment, but the big tanks dominate too much.
The Total War series is fantastic if you want to spend weeks on a single game involving lots of individual battles, but not so good for a quick go.
The Age of Empires seriues is good if you want a single battle, but the resource gathering can get in the way of fighting.
Dawn of War is a fantastic game set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe with 5 completely different races - with all other games the races are pretty much the same with some having bonuses or unique units, but in Dawn of War the races are completely different with different ways of collecting resources, not one unit is used for another race, etc.
If you can find Soldiers of Anarchy very cheap then it's worth a look. I keep banging on about how it's a great little game but no-one ever seems to pay attention! It's set in a post-apocalyptic world with present day weaponry, small groups of men which you equip, pick up new weapons, buy/sell weapons and a few vehicles, gain experience which you can get abilities to take into future missions, etc. Never got the recognition it deserved IMHO.

If your into sci-fi & fancy something a little different, go 3d. Homeworld 2. Looks absolutely stunning plus top quality rts. I have only played the original, which you could probably pick up for a few quid still looks impressive & will give some background to the story. Building fleets of battleships has never been so fun!
