Yes, i know that's just the way of the world these days with massive update files et. but what is there for people like me who have an hour or teo to spend and just want to nip in, kill or blow something up and bail.

CoD is just unmanageable. It's almost as if they designed it to steer you away from Campaign modes and into online where the cash flow starts wink

Is there such a game that is based on flight but with missions? I liked the ariel missions in CoD.

I *think* the answer to all of this is a gaming PC but can't be putting thousands into one then the yearly hardware upgrades eetc.

This is why I no longer have a console. I was only playing for a couple of hours every couple of weeks but was finding that whenever I started it up I had a combination of system and game updates that took upwards of 30 minutes each time.

I now have a gaming laptop which is easier to pick up than a desktop and generally play games which are a few years old so have fewer updates and won't cause the system to need an upgrade. I prefer single player games so can also delay any updates as no requirement to have the same version as others.

I downloaded a version of F19 onto my poverty spec laptop to revisit my youth. Works perfectly well and although the graphics are crude by modern standards it's still a good game and you can either just blow stuff up or use a bit of strategy as the mood takes you.

The PS5 will do system updates while it's asleep if you leave it in standby mode. And even the game updates you often get the option of ignoring them (apart from the very first one).
I often go a week or two between using mine and haven't really experienced any problem with updates

Rocket League. I'm utterly obsessed. Circa 900hrs now. Pop in, play a few games, leave. 5 mins per game.

The answer is a gaming PC but it's long past time for this myth to die.

PC gaming isn't as expensive as the console fanboys want to make it out to be... where as consoles are getting up to the cost of a entry level gaming rig and that's just the start, you then have to pay a monthly fee to go online. PC gaming has a higher cost of entry but a far lower ongoing cost (console hardware is sold as a loss leader, so they need to claw that back somehow) not to mention cheaper games on PC.

Also there isn't a need for constant upgrades... I build my gaming boxen to last for 5 years (then I can use man maths to justify a new one) without any significant upgrades.

Consoles now have the worst parts of PC gaming:

With none of the benefits.

PCPartPicker is your friend,
Here is a sub £800 build
If you're willing to spend £1000 here's a better build

Or as John87 suggested, a cheap gaming laptop. Again you're looking at £750.

Cant help with COD alternatives unfortunately, I gave up on MMOFPS years ago as they just became grind fests... But Steam's winter sale is on now and on PC you'll have choices for days.

Set it to auto update while on standby and your problem disappears.

Any game that involves crafting or a skills tree is a massive 'no' from me.

I don't have hours to learn some convoluted, arbitrary system. I just want to jump in, have some fun, and leave.

This is the reason I got rid of mine. Once took me longer to download and install the game than it took me to play and complete and that was the end of me. Sold mine as couldn’t be bothered every time I switched it on updating it for hours. By the time it updated I was bored and couldn’t be bothered playing.

This.

I change my gaming PC every 4-5 years, and it is used for VR flying mainly, which is about as CPU/GPU intensive an activity as you will find, and still don't feel like I need to keep spending a fortune to keep playing.

Same here - XBox Series X.

That and it took that long to "learn" a game. Very hard to find something to pick up and play.

Does it though? It might for System updates but does it download and install all the game updates at the same time? You then have to update the controller which i know is nothing compared to what we're talking about here but still..

Thanks Cap'n - i'll have a look at these in more detail and deploy the same man math to justify it to the fam.

PS5 downloads updates sequentially.

I think they throttle download speeds at the server end, to maybe 20mb/s max, so it can take a while to download a multi-gigabyte update, but it seems reliable enough.

As noted, it can be left on standby but able to download updates as they are pushed out, so that can be convenient.

Also, Fortnite.

Drop in, shoot stuff, marvel at the lighting in Unreal Engine, laugh at getting eliminated by Ariana Grande hanging out of a car window using a rocket launcher... laugh

Solo, Duos, Trios, Squads, a plethora of creator-made maps, OG mode, Reload mode, Rocket Racing mode... There's something for everyone smile and it is free to download, with scheduled updates (every Tuesday morning IIRC).

This is the reason I am thinking of dusting off my PS3. Fed up of updates, fed up of “exclusive” DLC, fed up of paying for a game but not owning or being able to play 100% of it.
Can still buy decent games 2nd /3rd hand.

Why are you buying a new setup every five years then?

That cost will vastly outstrip a console.
Primarily to keep pace with DCS development. Something not available on any console.

Haha, yes, a player with a 'skin' on the character model they are playing the game with tongue out

Fortnite has a ridiculous amount of collaboration skins one can purchase and wear in-game - Ariana, Snoop Dogg, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Terminator, Sarah Connor, Messi, Shaq, Mariah Carey, various Spiderman characters, Edward Scissorhands, the Incredibles... It's quite amusing and helps make it not feel very serious, unlike some other shooter games.

You can just have it auto update in rest mode. That's what I do with my PS5. It means I can indeed (once a game is downloaded/installed etc) just switch it on, jump into a game...
