I dont play games much these days, and dont read the reviews/mags either, and need some advice.

I played age of empires on the PC years ago. I love medieval settings, and really enjoyed controlling villagers, building armies, tending to crops and the attacking/defending side of play. Was always populous fan too.

Whats the best all round similar game available for PS2 today?

Also, assuming there are several releases, whats the best F1 game for the PS2?

I know its not the kind of thing you're looking for, but Burnout 3 was voted by lots of very important people as the best game on the PS2 in 2004. Burnout Revenge, its sequel came out last week

Hmmmm, even burnout managed to pierce my own insular non-gamers bubble. I might give it a try. I thrashed MOH on the pc years ago, that was a great game

Not exactly the type of game you mention but great fun anyway is Mercenaries. I picked it up from an online shop the other day for £15 and it is well worth it.

You basically have to capture enemy generals throughout Korea whilst working missions for the Allied forces, Chinese Army, and Russian Mafia. You have to play them off against eachother and it's up to you how you do stuff - either by stealth & intelligence or just blowing the crap out of everything.

See here for more info

Seeing as though everyone is recommending games outside the genres you specified, can I suggest God of War?

Fantastic cinematic button mashing game
