Space Marine 2

I got a couple of hours in last night and loved it. Runs very smoothly on my PC and looks fantastic. I normally find that games default to the highest graphics settings and I end up turning them down for higher framerates, but this just feels so well optimised.
I've seen people compare it to Gears of War but without the cover system, which seems like a reasonable comparison in many ways. So far it feels a bit like Doom or Halo where because the premise is simple, it would be easy to pick up and replay time and again.
If I had a niggle at this point it would be that most of the combat has been against massive swarms of small ads so the combat is at the button mashing end of the spectrum. I'm hoping that as the game progresses there'll be some more fights against one or two enemies that play a bit more to the parry / dodge mechanics. Not full-on souls like precision, just something where strategic thinking comes a bit more into it.
After playing it I spent the next hour or two reading up on Warhammer 40k lore which is, ermmm, 'extensive' shall we say....

Really enjoying this, feels like a throwback to old simpler games and it’s all the better for it, no massive skill trees or upgrade systems.
Chained an execution, headshot and parry to kill three enemies while being swarmed with dozens of them and couldn’t help but giggle like a child.
Graphics and the world they have built is excellent, pvp is great too.

I wasn’t a big fan of the first one. I think I got bored after a long lift ride near some titans and fighting some orks around some system I needed to turn on, but wait near, with waves and waves of bad guys.
I think after four attempts, each time fighting to very nearly the end of a 5 minute countdown as something very very slowly happened whole suddenly waves and waves of bad guys appeared, I called it a day.
Way too much on rails, and repetitive, and just felt utterly bland like a console game you could play with joysticks and buttons, not WASD and mouse needing speed/precision/real skill development.
I do like the idea of a proper FPS but in scenarios more like the DoW series which are a bit more open feeling, with a team you can customise and level up etc.
At least in DoW you could figure out new strategies to pass difficult levels. Swap Cyrus for Thaddeus and do a flank attack or something.
I’m just not sure how they keep missing the spot on that.
I’ll probably grab for £5-10 at some point and play it though.
