Hi. So recently I just seem to be not enjoying gaming much. I've given up on a few games halfway through and am just not finding myself enthused to grab the controller! I don't mind a blast on FIFA, GT7 or PGA but I'm just missing what I really used to love... to explain where I'm coming from:

Stories! A solo player, third person game with a great story.

Surely there's some I'm missing? The only truly great game I've played this generation to be honest is Stray, I still think about that from time to time, absolutely loved it.

Historically I've loved: Uncharted/TLOU, Portal series, Half-Life, GTA, Bioshock Infinite... going all the way back to original Resident Evils, Tomb Raider, Zelda & Mario on the N64. I must admit I did like the odd old skool RPG too, which perhaps does involve sort of levelling up, but on a more basic level to games these days, think FF7, Secret of Mana, Soleil, Shining Force.

Thing is, modern gaming is hard to crack for me... I hate games being too complicated, and my absolute worse thing is building and levelling up hurl for me, Fallout is probably the worse game I've ever played, and although I loved the older ones, modern Metal Gear Solid was awful. God of War was slightly better, but again, a bit too much going on for me. Cyberpunk has it's moments but has become a slog.

Astro was good! I'm looking forward to the next one, and Ratchet & Clank was enjoyable, if not particularly memorable.

I could go on and on talking about this subject, but to summarise what I'm asking... are there any games like mentioned above, single player games with a great story and characters, puzzles etc. that doesn't involve buying/building/levelling up (at least not above a very basic level) that I'm missing? I only have PS5 but could be open to other platforms if they're a better way to go.

I'm even wondering if I should go back to retro gaming, seeing as though that's where my heart (and mind) probably are! I do still have the original Xbox, N64 and Mega Drive somewhere, though who knows what state they're in. Also have various Spectrums and Atari 400 but think that's pushing it a bit!

Thanks!

Get Space Marine 2 when that comes out soon, looks a good un.

Have you tried Horizon Zero Dawn or the sequel Horizon Forbidden West?

My favourite recently is Ghost of Tsushima . Old school Japanese samurai game, graphically beautiful. There are some elements to levelling up in the game such as unlocking different types of sword attacks etc.

I think you would enjoy Outer Wilds. It's a simple premise with great storytelling and atmosphere.

It might sound a bit stupid but I enjoy Fortnite (zero build solo) where other games have left me bored.

It’s free to play, you can get premium each season using credits you win, and for me the but I keep playing for is the weekly challenges and stories. As soon as I complete them I will switch off or if you don’t play for a few weeks you can get some decent play time in. And when you cut out the building mode it’s just a shooter which currently also has BMW M2’s in!

Thank you guys.

Outer Wilds looks interesting, and I've not played Horizon so that series could be worth a shot.

Maybe worth mentioning I'm not really into 'fantasy' stuff... wizards and goblins etc.

Fortnite I tried when it first came out and disregarded it as a kids game and didn't have the depth I'm after. I'm sure it could be good fun for a quick blast though.

I really which I still had my teenage brain, I was so much more open to things!

I am also into the same type of games.

Days gone is a must, I recently finished A Plague Tale Requiem. Not my usual type of game but very good and a graphical masterpiece.

Red dead II is also an excellent game.

Also in to the same sorts of games, although I don't mind a bit of levelling up.

Some suggestions:

Ghost of Tsushima as above was very satisfying to play, graphically beautiful and a nicely told story.

Red Dead Redemption II, assuming you're happy with a slower pace.

Days Gone was surprisingly enjoyable, and the progression from being terrified hiding in bushes to taunting enormous hordes is really well done, bit slow paced at the start but keep at it and it really improves.

Assasin's Creed Origins was really enjoyable, you could tell some love had been put in to that game. Odyssey was 'OK' in comparison, haven't continued much beyond there.

Red Dead 2 is a very special game - you can get sucked into that for an age

Final Fantasy 7 Remake & Rebirth - over 200 hours there and an amazing storyline, if you played the original in the 90's then this one is an epic journey to take

Played the original Red Dead and didn't like that at all I'm afraid.

I will add Tsushima on to the list. Hey, I used to like Shinobi spin

I'm close enough now to wait and see what others pop up on Black Friday (I have a digital only console) but at least I have a few to check through now, thanks!

You should play Cuphead—that is, if your nervous system is too healthy. But it's a very satisfying game when you get good at it. I would say it's quite frustrating, but if you want to challenge yourself, it's a very good game

I'd counter with if you didn't play the original in the 90s, then don't bother hehe

For me, the sheer Japanese-ness of the whole thing was unbearably cringe inducing. The orgasmic gushing female 'noises' every time a male character said anything, the child like dialogue and delivery, it all just felt really 'weak' and unsophisticated, and I couldn't stick with it at all.

From memory I couldn't even manage to get through the demo despite being quite excited to get the opportunity to play a polished version having missed it in period with all of the hype around it. As more of an anime fan my partner stuck with it a bit longer and it was pretty painful to watch / overhear but she too soon got tired of the story telling.

Perhaps I'm just a heathen though. I have no idea why I found FF7 so unlikeable given the ridiculousness of Metal Gear and Death Stranding for example I actually really like. Probably just the rose tints of getting to experience MGS as a kid.

As others have said, given what you've explained, I'd strongly recommend trying Ghost Of Tsushima.
Has a bit of "levelling" going on, but it's very background and simple.

I'm another vote for Days Gone. I've enjoyed both Star Wars Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor. Hogwarts wasn't bad either.
Guardians of Galaxy was alright

Evil West would be a good shout if you don't want anything over complicated.

As others have said Days Gone is fantastic. If your not enjoying the first 3-4 just try and push through. It took me 3 attempts to get past that point but once I did it became one of my favourite games.

Another really good one is Detroit Become Human.

Getting some inspiration here as I just finished my first playthru of CP2077 and looking for my next fix. Was thinking about Days Gone or even the Tomb Raider reboots as I haven't played them yet.

Was the HZD sequel worth it? I loved the original.

Horizon Forbidden West is a great game and definitely worth it. Worth getting the Forbidden Shores DLC too. I think overall I slightly preferred the first, possibly because when the first one came it out it was something really different. The default price on Steam is still £50 including the DLC. Worth waiting for a sale when, iirc, it'll be half that.

I think if you have played Days Gone I would go with that as Horizon is more of the same (different machines and a few other things too but the story was not as captivating). Days Gone has character depth that brings you in like TLOU....
