If you must get one, then go for a refurbished Wii U with screen controller.
It's mostly backwards compatible with the older Wii, has HDMI already built in etc and has much better graphics compared to the original Wii.

Had to Google that. Never heard
Of it before. I will have a look thanks.
A wii doesn't connect via hdmi. So a Wii U does and can play most wii games automatically. Probably pick up a good Wii U with all the parts for around £75. To play Wii games you want to make sure the Wii U bundle you buy hjas the wii motes. (the hand helld movement controllers that a wii comes with). I have all of that myself. What were you or your son planning on playing on it? My kids love the wii u. Even though they also have switches.

You can get a dongle to use HDMI on the Wii, it works fine. However the Wii U has way better graphics and HDMI built in. The games are all pretty much the same as the Wii with lots more better ones.

If using a Wii U to run original Wii games, does it upscale the graphics to 1080p?
Reason for the question is that we still occasionally use the original Wii with a dongle/adapter to convert it to HDMI to feed a projector, but whilst it certainly works, the graphics are still 480p, so look very basic.
If the Wii U does upscale to 1080p, then I'm definitely going to get one as many of the original Wii games are such a lot of fun when friends and family are round - especially MarioKart and the Wii Sports ones.
Also, what are a few recommended newer Wii U games please?

The Wii U ended up benefiting from several games shared with the Switch in the early days which are fairly comparable graphics and gameplay wise. Games such as Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D world and Super Mario Bros look fantastic, as do other titles such as Fast Racing Neo and Injustice.
