An example I suppose of why votes like this are stupid.
Mario immediately jumps out (sorry) for me but hey what do I know?

Number 3 is Agent 47 - Hitman
WTF? Some dodgy voting practices methinks.

Must be getting old as I always counted myself as a gamer but several of these I've never heard of...
Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
Mario, Super Mario
Agent 47, Hitman
Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic
Sackboy, LittleBigPlanet
Pac-Man, Pac-Man
Link, The Legend of Zelda
Master Chief, HALO
Kratos, God of War
Shadowheart, Baldur’s Gate 3
Arthur Morgan, Red Dead Redemption 2
Pikachu, Pokémon
Steve, Minecraft
Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid
Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot
Cloud Strife, Final Fantasy VII
Astarion, Baldur’s Gate 3
Kazuma Kiryu, Yakuza
Ellie Williams, The Last of Us
Nathan Drake, Uncharted
Some of those must be from a single game only so if I haven't played that game (RDR2, FF7, BG3, etc.) I guess that explains why the names mean nothing to me.

If you don’t have a PlayStation then a number of those will mean nothing. Surprised to see two Baldur’s Gate 3 characters in there. They’re good, but think they made it because it’s a recent game rather than anything else. Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
Mario, Super Mario
Agent 47, Hitman
Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic

My gran(s) died in the 90s. But my Mum, who’s in her late 70s knows who they are as she had two sons who grew up playing their games way too much. She won’t be the only one.
Lara Croft in particular was an absolute cultural phenomenon in the 90s and early 2000s.
The gran comment was not directed to you personally but more as an example of cross-generational impact. Maybe a better example would be to ask a 5yr old.Lara Croft in particular was an absolute cultural phenomenon in the 90s and early 2000s.
Mario has a much higher impact across generations.
