Been a while since I last used a console. I've not used one since the PS3 came out.

Thinking about getting a PS5, the Slim version with optical drive.
Thing is, all my AV gear is in a cupboard behind the wall-mounted TV, and I'd want to keep the console in there too.

Presumably the controllers are Bluetooth, with a good enough connection to work through a plasterboard wall and some MDF?

Any overheating issues? Cupboards have top and bottom ventilation into the wall, and the top of the wall is open into the loft. No problems with the rest of the AV kit.

Can the PS5 be controlled by a Harmony Elite remote?

My setup was the same with PS4 and it worked perfectly. Have a PS5 now but have moved so never tried it in the cupboard but sure it would work just as well.

Harmony can do a few things but I found it easier to use the controller.

PS4 consumes around 120 watts when gaming.

PS5 consumes around 350 watts when gaming.

If your cupboard is properly ventilated then it should be fine but give or take the PS5 consumes three times the power of a PS4. So the heat dissipation definitely needs considering.

Regarding the Harmony - nope. It won't even pair with the PS5 to begin with. It would pair with a PS4 but funcionality was restricted (you couldn't use the transport controls for disc playback). With the PS3 the Harmony had full functionality.

You can use the TV remote via HDMI-CEC to get basic navigational functions on the PS5, so you can navigate around the interface with the joypad and various buttons set to operate your TV when in PS5 activity. Switching to the PS5 HDMI input on your TV should also bring the PS5 out of standby if HDMI-CEC is enabled for it. I have found that if you are playing movies then you realistically still have to use the dualsense.

I bought the official Sony remote expecting it to be a fully functional DVD/Blu Ray player type thing but it's just a pretty basic media remote. Doesn't do a whole lot more than using the TV remote over HDMI but it does have a PS button and a menu button so you can use it as a standalone controller for playing your movies off disc. Of course, it has pretty useless labelled buttons for directly launching Youtube, Netflix, Spotify etc.

I find the remote for my LG TV works fine for most things on the PS5, except actually playing games.

Regarding ventilation: The PS5 produces more heat than anything in my house apart from actual radiators. The cupboards will need to be very well ventilated.

Shame about the Harmony.

If mains power is turned off "at the wall", then turned on again, does the PS5 go into standby so that it can be powered up by the controller?
Power to my AV cabinets is controlled by a Shelly switch and Alexa.
I then use Harmony activities to actually turn stuff on, select inputs, etc.
If I can wake up the PS5 with the controller, that'll be fine.

Looks like I'll have to leave the cupboard door open while playing, or look at forced ventilation.

Any problems with the controller, working through a plasterboard wall? I'm guessing it should be OK, as my Nvidia Shield remote works fine.

Will the Ps5 be connected to an AV amp? I think they can be woken up by E-ARC, also the PS5 HATES not being shut down correctly so if you are cutting power at a switch rather than shutting down power (not rest mode) from the console you will have issues each time you boot it up

Yes, connected to a Denon X2800.

Would it be best to leave it powered up, in standby? There are unswitched sockets in the cabinets, as well as the ones that are switched by the Shelly

It's ok to switch it off at the mains, as long as you always shut it down from the menu first. It will power itself up from the controller as long as there is power. Even turning the TV to the correct HDMI input will cause it to turn itself on.

If it is in standby, then don't turn off the power because it really does cause problems.

PS5 has Standby and a Rest mode.

This explains the difference:

My PS5 lives under the stairs and we sit about 2m away from it, with a brick/block cavity wall in between. Never had a connection issue with the controllers.
