He’s been playing Minecraft on my old PS3 but wants the better Minecraft a PS4 offers

We don’t really want to connect it to the net so will it be ok standalone?

And I’m thinking CEX but which model etc

Cheers

This, the PS5 has been out for 3 years already, a PS4 is going to be seriously old. Plus, he’ll eventually get older and want to play more modern games.

Perfect timing for this question, Mrs Ityre wishes to buy her 9 year old a PS4 , I said best to stretch to the PS5 due to its age and tech, thanks for confirming my thoughts guys.

If you have a 4k screen then PS4 Pro. Otherwise all the rest will do the job just fine.

I'd just buy one for cheap as chips from Gumtree. Can get one for under £100, Just make sure it works before hand. PS4 Slim is the moden based PS4.

CEX are good as you get 24 mths warranty. It is a cheap upgrade from your PS3 and will easy keep him happy for a year or two.

I'd say PS4 Pro.
As that way it can be used to so play DVD discs in a possible movie collection. The PS5 won't play anything other than Blu-ray (and not 3D ones either)

Great info thanks chaps. I’ve just remembered the reason for the PS4 was to play DVD’s as we currently do with the 3 but have better Minecraft. He only plays Minecraft and a flight sim.

So all PS4’s play DVD’s?

Yes they do.

The best one to get is a late model PS4 pro (they all look the same but had internal revisions). The model number is CUH-72xx (where the xx is a couple of digits). However my original advice was given based on an assumption you were wanting to operate with a low budget. If so, PS4 Slim is the way. It's a bit newer than the original wedge shape PS4 so less likely to cause you issues. If budget isn't a concern then it's late model PS4 pro. If budget is important then PS4 Slim. If budget is really wanting to be tight then an original wedge shape PS4 (if it's been cared for) could be bought for cheap as chips in gumtree. Plays dvds. Plays Minecraft. Cheers

CEX Is usually a sound bet for stuff like this.

I've had poor experiences with used electronics from Ebay - And Gumtree / Facebook marketplace always feels sketchy.

I've always found that EBay struggles to match the prices of CEX, and there's a brick and mortar shop & 12 Month warranty to fall back on.

Could be worth considering a cheap-ish PC As an alternative depending on the age? All the minecraft you could want (Admittedly, flight simulator may be a bit tougher...) but will come in handy for schoolwork and offers vastly more opportunity for "creative" work and other games (Kerbal Space Program comes to mind!)

Yeah CEX are generally more discerning at buy in so the quality of stuff they sell is usually higher. Recent experience of this as they wanted to knock £30 off the buy price for a superficial scuff on a switch I took in. I didn't bother selling which I assume was the point.

And also, as everyone else said. Get a PS5, just from a surprise pov one of my favourite childhood memories was getting a Megadrive for christmas after asking for a master system laugh

CEX probably won't be the cheapest but they will give you a 24 month warranty with it

Still got mine. Keep meaning to sell it, but never quite got round to it.

I bought a used PS4 from Facebook last year and while it won't play the latest games, it is much much cheaper than a PS5.

I paid £80 for the PS4, two controllers and three games (which i wasn't interested in)
Then bought games i wanted, which were all less than £10 each.

Compared to £400 for a PS5 and then £50 per game, its a big difference.

Gamepass and a cheap Xbox One Series S would be where I'd go...

This was my solution too. You buy based on condition and type of seller. Usually it's obvious if it's been cared for. I've bought several second hand PS4 and PS4 pro and always been happy as I'm choosy on condition.

Love it. Will do that with mine when old enough!

I wanted an Commodore Amiga or Sega Megadrive and got a late model C64 hehe

Still loved it though until I did get a Megadrive some years later.

The A1200 was a great machine but never got the full software support it deserved, coming out close to the end of the Amiga era. Still, it did a damn good job of being backwards-compatible with the A500.

My Amiga gaming these days is on MiSTer but there should be an A1200 up in the attic, somewhere.

You can’t buy a new PS4 so if you must have one, get it from CEX with a two year warranty. Ideally a Pro. Do not be alarmed by it sounding like a jet engine at times, it’s completely normal. I really did enjoy my Pro, but it became absolutely redundant when I got the PS5, which your son will eventually want anyway so get that. They are readily available everywhere now.
