Hello all,

By way of introduction I am a Baby Boomer who’s formative years were enhanced technically by the possession of a transistor radio and my parents had a black and white television: so that should give you some idea of my knowledge baseline.

I have bought my son a PS5 and want to get some help from you about games as per the post title.

Here’s a picture of the types of race cars we would like to game .

1) 60’s Sports / Endurance

GT40
Lola T70
Chevron All
Mc Laren All
Porsche 904
Porsche 906
Porsche 908 - Coupe and Spyder Variants
Porsche 917

2) Can Am / Interserie

All cars

3) 60’s and 70’s

F1
Formula 5000

It would be great if anyone could point me in the best direction to get this sorted.

The more suggestions the better.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from any of you.

There is no game on PS5 that covers much of that array.

In reality your best punt would be Assetto Corsa on the PC (not the PS5) as there are a lot of mods (cars that the community have made themselves) that do at least approximate a few of those.

Not what you needed to hear though of course.

A couple of those cars are in Gran Turismo 7, but it would be a fair old slog to obtain them and a lot of being forced to drive stuff you're not interested in.

Have a look at Project CARS 2. It’s a little long in the tooth now, released for the previous gen in 2017, but there’s a decent number of historical cars and tracks available

Thanks very getting back to me with this info.

I've found Asseto Corsa on PS4 and PS5, I do believe?

Here's the PS5 one?

https://www.game.co.uk/en/assetto-corsa-competizio...

I've not checked out the PS5 release but have looked into the PS4 version and there's some great cars on there, for me. Could you please check out the link for the PS5 one and give me your view on that as a solution?

Or anyone else that might be looking at this?

Thanks so much

Thanks for this info.

There are some interesting, for me, cars to get started on. We don't need cutting edge graphics at this stage so your suggestion is very helpful.

Thank you very much

I imagine the PS4 version will work on the PS5 (worth double checking). If you buy the digital copy of it I suspect that'll be the most convenient way, it used to be on sale fairly often as it is a pretty old game now.

If the cars in the game interest you then I'd 100% recommend Assetto Corsa, as it is considered by many to have the best handling physics around the limit of grip etc.

Assetto Corsa Competizione, the PS5 version you linked to, is a sort of sequel to the original Assetto Corsa. It is entirely focused on GT3 cars so less what you were after I think. It would be a better choice if you wanted to race against people online though I suspect (I haven't played it to offer much more insight)

Agreed Project Cars 2 has a decent car selection, quite a good shout if there's some in there that interest you, they should all be fairly reasonably priced now as they're quite old smile

Thanks again for the Asseto Corsa advice. Re the the link I posted, I can see I need look carefully at the specific game title and it's content before buying.

You'd need either Assetto corsa or GTR2 or GT Legends but on the PC and then you can get mods and all you listed and more is available.
Assetto Corsa on PS4 won't be modderble sadly.

This an example of some of my mods on Assetto Corsa, you aren't ever going to see these in any sim anywhere.

PS4 games will play on PS5 .... with the exception of about 6 ... Assetto isn't one of those.

Amazon currently has Assetto Corsa Ultimate Edition at £19.99:

This is a list of the 178 cars in it:

If historical Sims are your interest, you'd be better off with a PC or gaming laptop.

Automobilista 2 has some fantastic 60's and 70's content as part of the base game and is being continually updated.

Asetto Corsa (pc version), rfactor 2 are both great as well. Have a look at this YouTube channel for inspiration - https://youtube.com/@GPLaps?si=dlS9zxmbfAxOKHz-

There has also just been a mod pack released for Assetto Corsa (on PC only) that rounds off a quite nice array of 60s race cars.

Appreciate you already have the PS5, but really Assetto Corsa on the PC is so well supported by the mod community that it's pretty much unparalleled in terms of its scope of cars / tracks etc.

Some of the mod tracks are absolutely phenomenal and just aren't in any other sims.

Thanks again, I'll look into PC versions/solutions as well. I'm pretty sure this won't be a flash in the pan thing so don't mind a bit of financial investment into the venture.

Have you got a link for the new 60's mod pack, please. I've had a look around and found a recent 60's F1 version, but I'm guessing you've come across a sports version?

Thanks.

You're going to be very excited by these, they're actually tempting me to plug my wheel back in to the PC and run a cable to the TV in front of my sim rig etc. to play Assetto Corsa again!

60s prototypes etc. (this was just released)
https://thracing.de/wsc-legends-60s-pack/

60s touring cars (a little older but should be a well balanced pack of cars)
https://thracing.de/touring-car-legends/

Later 'GT' classics (an even older pack of cars, but again, well balanced and great fun)
https://thracing.de/ac-legends-gt-classics-by-bazz...

I also noticed this, think it's somewhat work in progress, but 1969 Formula 5000...
https://thracing.de/1969-formula-5000-open-beta-by...

Bazza's mods aren't necessarily always 100% accurate physics / modelling, it's typically quite a large pack of cars that are more balanced around being competitive and fun to drive, but it pays off as being a lot of fun, with great looking grids.

As you have the PS5, there are some Logitech and Fanatec wheels that will work with both the PS5 and the PC. As you'll almost definitely be wanting a manual H pattern shfiter, the Fanatec eco system gives you a lot more options than the Logitech one, there are different wheels, a shifter, handbrake, pedal options etc.

Played this pack at the weekend and it is fantastic. Lapping these around Goodwood is so much fun!

Thanks again. That car list is quite incredible - to me anyway.

Another question. I've been looking for steering wheels. Are there any available that replicate the period look? To me, that means no paddles, no buttons, no logos - no nothing. For that time when you had to saw your way down the straight, let alone the corners.

And the H gate gear change addons - are they generally customisable to a Getrag 5 speed configuration?

What spec PC do you have for this. Can you give me a ballpark spec idea to get started on?

It doesn't have to be ultimate; just enough to play well.

I'd suggest having a look at Fanatec as they offer a wide range of wheels. There were a lot of deals on during Black Friday which you'll have sadly just missed but there's quite possibly some Christmas deals going on!

Fanatec do an H pattern shifter. It'll have at least 6 positions and a reverse, quite possibly it'll have 8 positions total.

In something like Assetto Corsa, you can happily configure each position to whatever you wanted, so if you wanted a dog leg first and so on that'd be fine.

Physically you can't change the mechanical layout of the gear positions of course, but I imagine you could fit a different gear knob for example.

Assetto Corsa is (in PC terms) a very old game now. It will run acceptably on almost anything you could buy now with a graphics card in I suspect! I've not looked at PCs for a long time though so will stop short of making any actual recommendations getmecoat

If you find anything you like the look of, feel free to post a link to it here and someone can cast an eye over the specs etc. smile
