Retro, CRT, SCART, and other gaming thread.
Discussion
Not sure if this sort of thread will get any traction, as this area of PH seems a little quiet.
I like a bit of gaming, and also like to involve the kids. Not a big fan of modern stuff… my fave is the Saturn. I’ve got a gaming setup of the following:
HDMI consoles - LG 77 inch OLED, Xbox Series S, One X, 360 Elite. PlayStation 4 slim, 3 slim.
Non-HDMI consoles - Sony 4:3 25” CRT, Wii (RGB SCART), PS1 (RGB SCART), N64 (composite SCART), Xbox Crystal (RGB SCART), PS2 (RGB SCART), Saturn (RGB SCART).
Need to add a Dreamcast to the list.
Anyone have anything similar, any recommendations?

Get a MiSTer ... FPGA based emulation at the circuit logic level and can do Analogue RGB output. Near perfect replication of 8 and 16 bit systems.(Can do up to PS1, with a Saturn core in the works .. won't be doing N64 or Dreamcast though).
It’s hard to show well, but it’s significant. That’s the PS3 connected to the large TV via HDMI, not via composite. It looks pretty bad.
I’ve had a look and I’m thinking the OG Xbox should probably be connected to the large TV, due to its 480P output for most games. Decent adapter needs to be bought from the US, by the looks of it.

I'm a bit of a retro gamer. I have a PS2, Dreamcast and I'm probably going to get an Xbox at somepoint. Still got my 360 mostly for Forza Motorsport 4.
I'm currently playing through 007 Everything or Nothing. Very cheesy but pretty good fun!
No CRT though, no space for that!
I have a PS2 and have kept a 24" CRT because the gun for Time Crisis won't work on a modern flat screen TVI'm currently playing through 007 Everything or Nothing. Very cheesy but pretty good fun!

That would work but I already have the gun and a CRT TV. Some little stands for handhelds arrived. Also finally found a decent replacement for the front of the 360, as the flaps always fail.
With regards to any emulation, that isn’t for me. It would be a lot easier and cheaper to just emulate everything, but that loses a lot of the reason for doing it; I’m a sucker for nostalgia, and the hardware is a big part of that.
What scaler are you running the SCART through before it hits the TV?
I've gone through a few over the years but settled on a Retrotink 5X and it's been excellent.
I've got a similar setup at home, previously running into a TV, but just a large monitor at the moment. I'm intending on adding a projector at some point but I'm still trying to figure out the logistics of fitting it into the room!

All the SCART devices go to the CRT, so no scaler.
I thought that might have been the case with when I saw the Destruction Derby pic.Nice to have room for a CRT!
The scanline and mask settings are pretty impressive on the 5X these days (especially if you enable HDR), but sometimes I just like sharp pixels. Though I tend to use a Steam Deck for most of my old gaming these days.
Wow great collection and setup OP, very tidy!
Just dug out my old consoles, Dreamcast and OG Xbox, the dreamcast did not handle long term storage well, power board, GD ROM drive both had issues. I've had fun researching what the modern day solutions are though. Now got the dreamcast up and running with a new power supply board that is about 10x smaller than the original due to external power, and GDEmu replacing the old GDrom drive and a VGA cable to a modern 32" monitor. 256gb SD card loaded with every game I could ever want, and I am in my gaming nirvana.
The Xbox still works great, purchased a hdmi cable and it works fine on the monitor... But the picture quality could be better, so I've discovered you can soft mod the console with exploits contained in certain games and this will allow extra video modes to be selected that we were locked out from using on PAL UK consoles.
Got my daughter playing SNES mini occasionally over the last year or so, now she's been on the Xbox and loved it, really rewarding getting the kids playing the older stuff.

I still need to get the soldering iron out for the dreamcast, something I was looking to avoid. CMOS battery needs replacing and of course they soldered it to the board.
Interesting you say the Saturn is your fave, I love Sega but for some reason the Saturn doesn't really interest me, probably because I was firmly into PS1 after my Mega drive days, I didn't even know anyone that had a Saturn, I think I had one go on one. everyone had a PS1 though.
I'm still really interested in it from a technical perspective though, it was definitely unique. I watched this incredibly geeky reverse engineering exercise of it recently, fascinating what lengths people will go to to to understand and crack the hardware https://youtu.be/jOyfZex7B3E?si=VpekhV15j8R_mtUx

My retro collection is a bit older
Games on all of them, thought the A1's are really really simple.
BBC B with second 6502
Victor 9000
Osborne 1 & 1A
PCW 9512
PC/XT
PET 3032 & 8032SK with 8050 disk drive
Sharp MZ80K
Apricot
PDP-11
Apple 1 (on loan to the museum)
Apple ][
Several VAX/VMS machines
Spectrum 48K
Probably my latest retro machine is my Amiga 500
Got several other machines that still need restoration, Some VAX 4000's & Alpha's. Not enough monitors though.

Impressive! would love to see pictures, particularly the Apricot, PETS and PDP. I wouldn't have the room or permission from the Mrs for that much hardware Games on all of them, thought the A1's are really really simple.
