Convenience
I was thinking Captive Audience. It is more convenient indeed to not have to put in the disc to change game etc. So when a game I want is in the bargain section I might get a digital copy..
But for those of us with a disc Ps5, I find I prefer the newer titles on disc as it is cheaper.

Playstation store prices - why are games so cripplingly expensive compared to physical copies?
Fifa 23 for PS5:
Amazon £32.97
Argos £34.99
Playstation Store £69.99!
FIFA 23 was released in September last year, from what I can see, it was £59 in stores on release day, a tenner more for the ultimate edition.Fifa 23 for PS5:

My “convenience” post was more aimed towards those who would want the game on release day. I imagine it’s much easier to choke down the extra ten/twenty quid than hunt around online for which stores have a copy on the shelf, then go get it etc.
Octopath traveller 2. Just looked and its discounted to £37 on PSN. I bought it new £29.95 delivered in physical last week. I can play the game through and sell on for around £25 on gumtree with no hassles. Could even get £16 trade in from CEX if I was being lazy.
Physical all the way. Only time I say otherwise is when it is years old and digital can be cheaper as the physical ones are rarer by that point in some cases and can cost more than you really want to pay

It is convenience. I used to buy all games digitally on PS4, but it really is the worst way to buy games. You pay top dollar price and you can't sell the game on when you're finished with it. The PS5 digital edition is always going to be a bad purchase because after buying a handful of games you will have paid more than the disc version and over a 10 year life cycle you will have had your pants pulled down and tossed in the fire.
The thing is, consoles are successful because they are convenient. You know games will work and you can play in any room with a TV and a controller. The hardware on its own is not worth the price you pay for it especially a year after launch, and you have to pay a subscription to play online. But people are willing to pay because it's easier, so it's no surprise really that digital versions of games cost more money. They wouldn't do it if people didn't pay.

Yep - at least with PC and Steam (or other games stores) you are always going to be able to take your games with you as you upgrade/change PC. With consoles, things are less certain. The thing is, consoles are successful because they are convenient. You know games will work and you can play in any room with a TV and a controller. If Sony decide that the PS6 isn't going to be backwards compatible to the 4 and 5 (they have already ditched PS1,2 and 3 compatibility even though the PS5 could easily handle all three of those older consoles) then bye bye all your games unless you keep a PS5 running for them.
I've got a PSVR with PS4 Pro. If I wanted to move to a PS5 and sell the PSVR/PS4 pro , virtually all my games are downloads so I can't bundle the VR ones in to get a better price or help it shift quick. They also wouldn't be compatible with PSVR2 were I to upgrade to PS5/PSVR2, so I'd need to keep the bulky old headset/splitter box around to play them as well as a dedicated Camera. At least I could keep playing my PS4 games which is something.
(I have a bunch of PS1, PS2 and especially, PS3 games too. I keep my OG PS3 around to play them. At least it's a decent BD/DVD player so I get extra functionality)
Also, even though you do see decent deals in the sales on the Xbox or PS stores, they rarely come close to what you can get by shopping around the various digital stores for PC games. Steam keys can be bought on nearly every PC digital store, not just Steam. Some amazing deals to be had all year around, not just on sales.

I was more of the mind that the hardware costs are still often under cost price. Yes stuff moves on but man I compare my £480 ps5 to my £5k gaming pc and both place very nicely on this 4k Oled. My RAM costs the same as my PS5. I feel the PS5 is very good value for money. The thing is, consoles are successful because they are convenient. For OP though, you have Sony to thank for that since they are the ones pushing for £70 titles. They have been slowly bringing it up to that for a few years now and I can't see it ending there. However being fair, the price of games hasn't really went up much in 20 years but the cost of development has considerably BUT on the other end of that publishers are absolutely rinsing consumers by putting predatory purchases in already expensive games.
The industry is just fked really.

I'm sure spending £70 on a game would feel good value after that Unfortunately, the Playstation store rarely changes the RRP of a digital game unless it gets shunted on to the 'essentials' range. Only people who are absolutely desperate to play the latest game will pre-order or pay day 1 prices.
Personally, if there's a game I want, I'll shop around to get the cheapest deal, part of which is checking whether it's ever been on a sale on the store using https://psdeals.net/gb-store. If it's cheaper digitally, I make sure I buy a voucher through either shopto.net or CD Keys to save a few extra pennies. I've also got the Playstation Store app, as on there I can add titles to a wishlist, and get notifications if they turn up in a sale.

£69.99 is rrp, Amazon and Argos are running deep discounts. It's rarely financially the best option to buy a new release from a digital store.Fifa 23 for PS5:
