While clearing out old junk in a cupboard today I discovered my old, first-gen Sony PSP - fond memories smile It still seems to work when plugged in but the battery won't charge. It did find a later OS version online somehow but the memory card in it isn't large enough to download and apply the update.

Amazon lists replacement batteries and memory cards (both third-party), half tempted to take a punt. I take it any online services/support have long since ceased for the PSP? I have a few games, any good ones worth picking up for a bit of nostalgia?

Also to note, don't pony up for a sony memorystick if they're stupid money, you can get adapters for sd cards, also a lot easier to manage

I have a couple of these - a black one and a white one. Bought in Japan before they were released here.

Ridge Racer is great fun. Mercury's decent. I think I have an early FIFA and also Metal Gear Solid. Will get a list of the other games I have.

They'll play videos pretty easily too.

Great little platform and a real quality feel to it.

Pretty much all phones these days will emulate the PSP with no issues. If you want physical controls plenty of options around to bolt onto the phone.

A 10 second Google search will show you where to get ROM 'backups' for pretty any PSP game with no need to spend a single penny.

It's never quite the same as playing on original hardware though.
I'd rather go down the route of using the original system.

This - my intent was to make use of the original hardware if possible rather than simply getting rid of it.

Just dug mine out. Never bothered selling the games as, by the time I thought about it, they were worth just pennies.

Watched a lot of fan sub anime on mine, but had to convert them as there were limited formats you could use (and i think even then you had to buy a pack) - remember having to convert to avi, but was a good screen.

Game wise - Grand Theft Auto Libery City Stories - really enjoyed that game
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 - seem to remember it was on ok game
Football Manager Handheld - can't remember whether I liked this or not
World Tour Soccer - think I enjoyed this.

Also still have the Spiderman 2 movie

Looking at Amazon I also had World Tour Soccer 2 - which I remember hating and presumably gave away.

So anyone want any UMDs ? smile

Side note - I did bust one of the joysticks on mine. Replaced it myself but the replacement was never as good or as strong, and also snapped, the second replacement was poor and by that stage I was more watching videos than playing games and my Archeos 604 was far superior at that so the PSP went in to storage.

I also bought a japanese one in Shanghai before the UK luanch…its a beautifully made device, just hindered by Sonys love of proprietary media formats!

I had football manager err... GTA and some other games for it too... not sure I even used it that much!

I had a first gen one when they came out. I had a warhammer squad game I wanted to replay, so I got a screen damaged one for £50. Turns out it was just the outer plastic screen cover, so a third party replacement front case was found and swapped over, bit of a faff but I took my time.

Works a treat. Got a Third party 8gb memory stick and a new battery, all work fine.

I just wanted to replay that 40k game, but I've now got the GTA mini games, all the Final Fantasy remakes castlevania which cost me £50 but is very hard to get for less than £80 now. Ghost in the shell, and a few other games.

Sits along with my switch and evercade mk1.

I was late to the party but picked up two models. a 1000 model and a 3000 model. I Then spent a couple of years collecting quite a wide variety of games for them.

I also have 4 ps vitas, One for each of my two kids and they love playing little big planet, rayman origins, the pet game, and lego games on it. I have two hacked ones, one of which is the red oled model with soul sacrifice artwork on it.

I have a nintendo switch and steam deck but they kids focus on the vita every time. Just the right size for them.

I do like the PSP but the vita just felt so much more substantial.

These are great! I found mine a couple of years ago and sadly it doesn’t respond to the power adapter so I’m not sure it’s viable.

It’s such a great thing and the disks were so neat, the whole thing feels really well made and doesn’t feel like a toy at all.

I remember spending hours ripping films, then compressing them with some software and adjusting the format to suit and saving on the little memory cards for watching on flights.

Any advice on how to reanimate mine would be welcome thumbup

Are you sure the power supply works?

If you have a multimeter you should test that first.

Swapping the battery out might be an idea too.

If it's the onboard charging circuit causing the issues, unless you can fix these sorts of thing yourself, it's probably a "spares or repair" on eBay and buy yourself a replacement one instead.

Agreed. I didn't feel they were expensive enough to spend much time repairing. So easier option is just to pick one up from gumtree nice and local or whatever your equivalent is in your area.

Thanks- will test the power supply - didn’t think of that. I always assume it’s the technical but that’s bust not the simple part.
