Having fun in LFS
Discussion
This game is great. Been playing S1 for ages and dowloaded version S2aplha the other day.
Try getting the whole game and trying the FZ250, bit of a handfull but so much fun. I my opinion its one of the best driving games on the Pc and quite happy to pay for it on line (some peeps might prefer a game in a flashy box from a shop, but this one doesnt have a box, comes from the net and its still a gem)

Spent most of the weekend playing the S1 demo and then the S2 demo (pure fluke it came out at the right time). Pretty darned good but there is something not quite right about it that I can't put my finger on. Might be just that I'm playing on an LCD with a 24ms response...
Will keep on playing it though - having too much fun.

It's actually quite a good sim in my opinion, not quite 100% accurate but it's getting better all the time.
I believe it is the first sim to model flat spots on the tyres. Try locking the wheels under braking then press the F9 button and roll forward slowly, you'll see the temperature at each point on the tyre. If you have a FF wheel you'll feel the flatspots.
There are some rather quick cars available in the licensed S2 version as well, feel much better than the slow cars in the demo.
I tried S2 last night, last time I played it was before S1, S2 etc, just one version - at least a couple of years ago. I had to set the steering compensation control to 0, as it felt way to woolly otherwise.
Will be purchasing at the weekend, v reasonable price - all in favour of losing the box, shipping, etc to just download for a reasonable sum. Must help reduce piracy as well, I wouldnt even bother wasting my time downloading some warez version to find it still hangs etc at that price.

You can download the full version any time you like and only the demo is available, you then simply buy the license you want and activate the product over the net. That method must severely reduce piracy because you can't copy a game over to another computer without losing the activation.
After battling with their website for days (seems to be an issue with my local ISP) I finally managed to purchase a license from them.
Spent the next few hours trying to drive the now unlocked vehicles and getting very, very frustrated.
Blasted wheel/pedal set has the throttle and brake on the same axis so no left foot braking. Getting very miffed with the grip/slip balance especially under braking as there is no feedback as to how well things are working so I end up braking way too gently. Trying to pull donuts in a 7 proved to be a veritable disaster in its own right too as they seem to refuse to spin the wheels up unless you are trying to go around a corner (slight exageration) at which point any attempt to balance the throttle up is doomed. No sudden spike in revs just a huge slide...
The only reason I kept going was that I've driven such beasts on road and track and had no trouble controlling them so it must be just the controller (or the game) and some acclimation effort needed.
Of course in spite of all this I was having great fun which only ended when my GF called asking where I was 10 minutes after I was supposed to give her a lift home (survival instinct kicked in at that point).
Definitely up for a proper race sometime - not sure I am organised enough for a league. Although at the moment the challenge is controlling the car not actually beating anyone else on the track.

Well i'll be happy to setup a league table webpage, and we could schedule races for 1 night of the week like with GPL andthe more enthusiastic among us casual races at the weekend ?
Good thing about LFS is we can trade car setup files easily, so it shouldnt be too hard to get a pack of us in relatively competative cars
Thoughts ?

Anyone up for a race this evening? I'll be online from about 6pm until 8pm.
My screen name is Marvelharvey, you can search for other drivers but have type in their full name. Two other people at my work will be playing, one will be on as 'Alkan', the other on as 'Lucis De Jesus'. Watch out for Lucis, he has a bad habit of totaling his car at the first corner along with some other drivers

I too am having difficulty in judging where the grip is/isn't. At least in GPL, you could see when we tyres were locked under braking, but now it all seems to be guess work. Although, I've only played LFS for 45 mins, so time will tell!
