Discussion
It was discussed quite a bit when it came out on this thread:

I would say the general consensus was along the lines of...
'...great game. Harder to complete on the 'normal' difficulty than you might imagine, with a steep learning curve early on and some tough fights from the outset. Some of the bosses and enemy types are a real PITA. But persevere and learn the mechanics and it's worth your time and investment.'
Others may completely disagree with that summary of course

In brief, it's a very good game. Controls, gunplay, graphics and sound are all superb, haven't played mutliplayer so can't comment on that. On anything but the easiest setting it can be very difficult though, you absolutely have to play it in the right way or you'll get destroyed. On the downside it does have some annoying platform sections, and there is one particular enemy who just feels straight up unfair.
The Marauder is pretty easy when you know how, but requires good twitch reflexes.
You need the super shotgun or ballista.
When is eyes go green, go for your gun.
More than the platforming, the whole 'lock and key' approach to enemies and weapons just grates with me. I don't mind the limited resources, but making enemies almost immune to certain weapons, ruins the flow.

Gave up half way through, as even on easy there’s a boss (the marauder) who absolutely destroys me. Plus, awkward platforming has no place in a Doom game.
Same here - I played Doom (2016) to completion a few times , but just got sick of Eternal , mainly the stupid platforming parts and the way every enemy just runs into your face at warp speed. Doom 2016 just had a much better balance and simplicity that worked, Eternal felt like a mess where they've added everything they can think off and turned it all up to 11 in the belief that more must be better. It wasn't.Downloaded this on Gamepads a couple of days ago...
Just been playing this and got up to Exultia, to be more specific where the two massive titan things are frozen in combat and then your having to jump around pits of lava while everything is trying to kill you.......I must have been killed at least 50 times trying to get through this part yesterday and only just got through it today.
I'm only playing on 'hurt me plenty's which the game seems to be doing

Even since the original Doom I've been a huge FPS fan. But I've just finished playing Serious Sam 4 and I could have left it after about 2 hours. I thgink I'm just losing interest in FPS games after the think end of 25 years.
I'm 43 and if I'm honest it's taking a hell of a lot of luck to get me past where I was stuck yesterday lolI'm the same still enjoy FPS but this is just pissing me off too much. I completed the last one on standard difficulty but this I've had to drop to easy and I'm still dying a lot. The afore mentioned marauders are horrible. I don't get these games that make everything so hard, it's just not fun. I think they have made it too complex.

Platforming never works properly in FPS games because it's hard to judge where your feet are.

I'm going to refer back to my previous post and suggest Ion Fury for a proper old school FPS.
I had a look and the graphics look a bit dated. However, it's not always about the graphics, so I may well take you advice and make a purchase. CD keys do it for about £12.50. Thanks.

Rented and completed this the other week - really enjoyed it.
I wasn't sure about the health/armour/ammo thing at first but it gets easier - but i agree its tough in places.
The Marauders were horrible the first few times, but near the end of the game were pretty easy to dispatch. key thing i found was keep them about 10ft away and the super shotgun was my friend. The cat they spawned were really annoying though.
Some of the battles were absolute madness, made a difference to the usual FPS experience

I didn't think much of Doom 2016 but the fawning reviews for this had me convinced to try it, at least it cost me nothing since it's on Games Pass.
In playing it, I found it worse than Doom 2016. There was loads to write home about, with really crisp graphics and stunning performance. Some of the art assets and details in the levels look great. Standing on the cliff-edge of a shattered highway and seeing a giant demon with a fortress on it's bag lumbering along the horizon, or activating the plasma spear of a broken down war mech to form a bridge through the guts of a dead demon, how could you not love that?
However, playing the damn game just soured it for me. The main complaint is that it's no longer a FPS as we know it, with the whole 'gun chess' idea being pushed too far. There is too much emphasis on building combos and managing resources and cooldowns, linking the fodder enemies to the big beasts and trying to find the right weapon to kill them.
The original Doom games were a bit of a power fantasy, walking the curve from embattled grunt with just a few shotgun shells to a walking arsenal ready to circle strafe hell's deadliest minions. This time, these big meaty guns feel really weak and ammo is generally way too rare unless you've just chainsawed. The idea of gun feeling useless unless you use it again the few enemy archetypes it was made for just makes them seem useless overall. The look and feel of the guns is really spoiled by the 4th wall breaking damage debuffs.
I never really found the game that difficult but I didn't finish it. After a while of playing it, I was asking myself if I was enjoying it or if I was just stuck in the loop of blasting through a fight, grabbing a collectible and passing a crap platforming section before starting again. Less '30 seconds of fun' like Bungie did, more '30 seconds of distraction'. I just gave up, it's a great game critically undermined by rubbish gameplay.
Far be it from me the tell the daddies of the genre what to do with their creation but this ste just isn't good enough. Doom needs to go back to being an exploration based shooter with engagements at a variety of ranges rather then the silly arena-based guff it has become.
FWIW, I also played Ion Fury this year and that was much better, truly what a FPS should be. It also showcases just how amazing the Build engine is.
