No. No other way. You just need to get a good exit on the bend before and carry as much speed as possible over the gap. You make it.

Having said that, took me ages to get it right.

Yup, you need to back up as far as you can and boot it.

Back up? No time to back up - just keep your speed up prior to it.

Also - top tip: Do not wait around for Foehammer to get toasted; just go straight on and save a few seconds.

I think I did it, by keeping on going with as much speed as possible.

On the harder difficulty levels your time to do the course is reduced, so you do not have time to backup.

Indeed. On 'legendary' difficulty I made it with about 5 secs to spare, and that was by not waiting to be told that Foehammer had been shot down.

Well remembered, that is of course the only way you can do it in time.

Actually that's not just a soldier, that's Sgt. Johnson who someonmehow manages to survive and is seen again in Halo 2. It also explains why he is so pissed off all the time in the H2 cut scenes - obviously trying to come to terms with being sexually molested by an Elite.

As mentioned, not played it in a while so I can't remember the last time you see him before that homo-alien clinch but.........although it is Johnson, there is no way in hell he got off of Halo before it blew. I think they conveniently forgot about that cutscene when coming up with the story for Halo 2 & the books.
