best car racing games

gt4 isn't what it could be - hopeless (absent) AI and only 5 cars to race against, plus no damage and it still being faster on some corners to slam into the wall - not really very realistic
I think the actual racing on TOCA is better than GT, though obviously the graphics and car choice are nowhere near

My mate has got Forza and he's right into it at present. The cars can be damaged but there is no proper BHP figures for cars from what I can gather. Ideally a mix of GT4 and Forza would be best!
My all time favourite racing game has to be Super Monaco GP on the Mega Drive. I played that soo much when I was about 13.

www.liveforspeed.net is the game for me.
Vrooom, can you tell me more about this game. I have been looking at the site a bit lately and thinking of downloading the demo. But what is it really like? Is it a good representation of car handling and real racing, or is it just some duff arcadey online car game?
Thanks.

Try rFactor instead. It uses the GMotor2 engine which is what will be powering GTR2 and GT Legends.
The rFactor demo comes with the option of racing online only but just set up a passworded race to test it out.

I've played the demo a fair bit. Now I'm no racing driver but this is the first driving game I've ever played that's felt remotely realistic - controllable power slides, lift off-oversteer, steering with the throttle. Great fun.
Keep meaning to buy it when I have a bit of cash.
Anybody fancy joining an online game and having a bit of a PH head to head? :-D
Also, it works on low spec machines (Mine's a 1GHz Athlon). Needs a decent wheel/pedals though, I have an MS FF wheel.
For me GT and TOCA are the two kings, if somebody could combine the best bits of both they would have a corker of a game.
Completely agree with zebedee though about the lack of damaging the cars in GT being an issue. If they were granted licences allowing them to damage all the cars, it would be a far better game, though it still misses a lot of tracks I would like to see. But they do have a good range of real cars, though thre are the notable exceptions.
TOCA is more fun for the actual racing and TOCA 3 looks like it will be fantastic when you crash. It has some good tracks too - you can go to Donnington for instance.
What I really want is a game with all the UK tracks and the usual suspects you get in these games.
Something with a whole host of cars, including Nobles which seem to always be missing from these games
A good amount of cars to race against at once.
Decent AI.
Crash damage, including player injuries.
Decent physics.
The ability to flip the car.
The ability to modify the car, including resprays. I don't care much for custom paint jobs, but I don't see them reducing the game play.
The ability to get sponsorship and so on to raise money.
Having to pay to enter races.
Having decent network play, where the host can take money for entry and payout accordingly.
The ability to upload cars - PS2 would require some sort of USB flash drive software and some web applications with virtual moeny, etc (though this would be easily hacked).
Is that too much to ask for? Maybe I should finish off the PC one I started a couple of years back...

their was a few race games on the Amiga. top down look and was great. think it was called something like Supersport or siper somthing like that. Used to play it alot. very addictive
There was also that isometric style game which as fantastic fun to play for hours. No idea what it was called though. They came out with a version where you could race with carvans in tow, and another expansion pack where you could race cows on wheels
There was also "stuntcar racer" on the commodor 64 where you had to race a drag car on something like a rollercoaster - not very good physics, but lots of fun too... getting lifted back on by the crain always took ages!

edit - got it, it was called "super skidmarks" - number 2 was the one with the cows.

Supercars - top game, had it on the ST. You had to "deal" with this dude that looked like Daley Thompson to buy upgrades and new cars
Hardly a driving game though!
YES! I had an Atari STFM, but actually had this game on the Spectrum +3 - I think i was only about 5, but remember it well - you could put rockets and stuff on the car aswell couldn't you, or am i confused? TBH though i couldn't get off the first level as my skill at that age wasn't what it could be, but it taught me well....
So when i moved onto the ST it was all about using my new found skills in Stunt Car Racer and the original Grand Prix, another couple of blinding games.
Cheers,
Rob.
