Xbox360 v PS3 v Revolution
Discussion
After the launch of the Xbox 360 last week, i was ready to say it would win the console war this time with it's 1 terraflop processing power. However, today's press release of the PS3 has left me even more amazed - 2.18 terraflops :O ! ! ! !
If you haven't seen it already, check out gamesradar.com for the latest. Well worth downloading the videos of the PS3 - absolutely incredible!
I'm gonna be getting both an Xbox360 and a PS3, though am undecided about Nintendo's offering as yet.
What will you be getting?

My wife has already asked me to try to resist the temptation to buy either a XBox360 or a PS/3.
Anyone would think I had past history of early adoption of new consoles.
Edit: Currently the collection includes a PS/1, PS/2, GameCube, GameBoy Advance, Nintendo DS (my son bought that though), a Gizmondo (on loan) and two XBoxes (one of which is a Japanese import Halo2 Special Edition in clear green), so I guess she does have a point.

Great news that I am not the only gameaholic then.
Currently have:
2 x Xbox
5 x PS2s (1 in white and 2 of the slim ones, one travels with me everywhere)
1 x Panasonic Qcube - cos the gamecube wasn't worth it.
2 x PSP
1 x N64
1 x NES
1 x SNES
1 x Famicom (yeah, same thing)
1 x Master System (big original style)
1 x Megadrive (complete with filed down slot for import games
All chipped
and, finally.....the one that took all my pocket money to buy a game (only got 8 games)...
The mighty Neo Geo! Cartidge version. Thinking back, I had no business buy Fatal Fury 2 for £215!
Systems I did not bother with were the MegaCD and Saturn because...well...you just knew.
Will be getting the Xbox360 next week, I hope.
I dont know if Im even gonna bother upgrading to the next gen consoles. Lately, ive found most console games to be crap and I havent even touched my ps2 for 4 months now.
Im down with the pc gaming and its been like that and will prob stay like that. IMHO, pc gaming allows much more freedom within games(reskinning and such) and I despise playing games with a controller(yes, i know u can get m/k for consoles)
PC gaming for life.

Apparaently the PS3 has an Nvidia graphics chip that is far far more powerful than anything they produce for pc's.
Whilst the step up from PS1/N64 to the current consoles was an improvement in frame rates and 3D graphics, i don't think it was a major step forward.
The next generation consoles will be a massive leap forward in terms of sheer processing power and graphical detail.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes programmers to get the PS3 humming. 2 years at least. Parallel processing is a new science to the games industry so there is a steep learning curve to climb. Even at the top of the curve this architecture means that a lot of processing power is used in housekeeping and not all those teraflops will be available to the user.
Microsoft say the PS3 is over specified and contains loads of bells and whistles that aren't strictly necessary and which cost money. So Microsoft could be cheaper at retail this generation.
Nintendo have a unique advantage and they are milking it. The Revolution has a broadband connection and is backwards compatible with just about everything Nintendo has ever made. This means that from day 1 you will have access to that glorious back catalogue making the machine a must have for any serious gamer.
The platform that will sell most after this weeks announcements is nGage. Nokia have announced that they will be putting the nGage feature set into loads of new phone models which will put 100s of millions of these platforms out there.

Backwards compatibility is a useless gimmick.
Hardly anyone plays their old games once the new consoles come out.
I have a large varity of emulators for my PC - I frequently load up and old eight-bit game (e.g. Uridium) for a quick blat. Modern games are often too "player-intensive" for a quick game of something. So all in all I beg to differ.

I seriously doubt this. Top end PC graphics cards cost loads more than an entire PS3 - how can it possibly contain a super chip that outperforms a PC one which costs several times as much money?

Because they buy so many. Millions.
It is a game of leapfog. Each new generation of consoles has better graphics than current PCs. Over the life of the console PC graphics catch up and overtake only to be beaten again by the next generation console.
The chips on PC graphics cards and in game consoles are made by the same companies so this is a deliberate part of their strategy.
