Im really struggling to get into GT4, I HATE understeer, and everything does, at stupidly low speeds. I have tried putting the "understeer aid" up (which feels wrong to use anyway) and it sorts out most issues, except everything now seems to have a stuck throttle whenever I lift off to get the back to swing round a bit mid corner.

Anyone got any suggestions?? Does the DFP wheel make things seem less stupidly understeery (and overly snappy?)

Despite my general dislike of the physics engine, im now 62% in and have 260odd cars, over 60 of them TVRs lol - just wish it was less understeery and thus, more enjoyable.

GT4 was a disapointment for me too. Not cause of the way the cars handle, but cause its boring as hell to be honest.

What you got 60 TVR's for anyways? One in every color?

Ever heard of slow in, fast out?

If you're taking the right line, at the right speed, then no worries.

Everyone says the cars understeer like crazy when they first play GT4 (the same with GT3 as well IIRC, the opposite was true with GT1+2 when new players couldn't stop spinning), most of the time it's you cning into the corner waaaay too quickly. Brake earlier, turn in then nail the throttle on the way out of the corner helps. Also, make sure you have all the aids off (or maybe TSM set to 1) and if you have a 4WD car, you can buy some variable front rear power thingy that lets you send most of the power to the back.

Never noticed a bit understeer problem myself.

Turn all the driver aids off completely. Install some semi-racing suspension and turn up the camber Leave the rear at 0 camber and turn the rear stabilser up to 10 if you want some proper oversteer action

I would like to see how much you would play a game you really enjoyed! I like the physics engine (but I need a wheel) and I only have half as many cars as you , then again I do have 20 million credits to spend

Turn the traction off.

Hey presto, power oversteer.

its the opponent "ai" (absence of intelligence) that ruins it for me - its total crap.

also the fact that you have only 5 competitors makes it way duller than it needs to be - usually you are either totally outclassed, or way ahead - they should have limits for power/weight ratios as trial and error with different cars and different series trying to find a close race is way too time-consuming

they really need to up the ante in terms of AI, damage and number of cars for future versions if we are to still keep buying it

pleased with the number of cars though!

Went back to the beginner levels after completing my licences last night. I've a modified MX5 running about 160bhp that I entered into the Spider/Roadster competition but everything left me for dead......I need more power. Decided rather than modifying it further I'd spunk the cash on a new Honda S2000 giving me 220bhp(?). Anyway I re-entered and of course the AI cars also got a power increase, so I was only a little quicker than before........managed to come first in 1 race before packing up for the night.

Forget the B-spec fella doing it for me as well.....my 3 year old would be quicker!

yep.. big dissappointment.. I played it for about 5 hours, then bought GTR, and haven't touched it since.

there is something fundamentally wrong with GT4's physics... there's all these "do this.. do that" to cure it.. but that's not right.. take a powerful rwd car, turn driver aids off.. that should be enough.. but it's not.. T350, M3, S2K, RX7.. none of them will power-oversteer properly.. as I've said before, even my wimpy 140bhp mx5 will power-oversteer in really tight turns..

a DFP makes it no better.. I bought a DFP for these two games.. and thank god its GREAT on GTR, as I would have had to sell it otherwise..

where in GTR the wheel enables you to feel the steering go light as the rear starts to move, and perfectly weights up as you wind on lock/opposite lock, and generally makes you feel good for driving properly (slow in fast out etc), in GT4, you just feel like you're being punished all the time..

sell GT4 on ebay, buy yourself a copy of GTR, and a good wheel.. you'll NEVER look back!

No there isn't it's just that the cars come with semi-slicks. Put "economy" or "standard" tyres on and then away you go, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I agree with Dobbo, when you buy the car it scrolls along the bottom that if you want realistic handling from the cars then fit a set of normal tyres, economy are best for low powered cars and pick a slightly better set for something with more power, then you can really enjoy the handling and can induce power oversteer on things as underpowered as MX5's and AE86 corollas.

When I first played it, I thought it was a tad understeery, but then I realised most games allow you to carry much more speed into a corner than you realistically should. The truth is, GT4 is probably more realistic than the previous GTs.

...but still not a patch on GTR !

I've heard most of this before.. but I'll give it another go with what you've said above..

oh, I agree that you can induce oversteer, but I've found, only with a scandanavian flick, severe lift mid-corner, jab of brakes mid-corner etc etc.. try such agressive ham-fistedness in GTR and you get up-close and personal with some old stacked michelins!!

i have to agree with pierscoe1/bca. theres issues with it. like i was playing it the other day, driving the caterham with 250 bhp(which is rubbish btw) oh and an lsd.
get wheelspin in first so for a laugh decided to keep changing up until i was at the rev limiter in 5th!. now obviously, try this in real life and you'd be facing backwards before the top of 2nd gear, but no, on gt4 i could drive like this for probably 400 metres until i came to a corner, maybe i'll spin now i thought! nope turned in and understeer imo from my experiance of the game theres pretty much nothing you can do to powerslide a rwd car in it(you can a four wheel drive car though oddly)

it just seems that when you break traction it has no affect on the grip of the tyres
its strange though as on GT3 you could powerslide anything with rwd and more than 200bhp.
imo in many ways its a step back from GT3 and definetly no where near GTR/GPL

just tried it again after the posts further up.. RX7, 350bhp, economy tyres....

turn 1 of laguna seca... start from really slow, second gear, full welly... tyres screaching like mad and loads of (crappy) smoke pouring off them.. bouncing of the rev-limiter... and.... understeer

WTF!?!?!?

it's just bolks !

To be honest i really havent been able to get into the game either. ive got about 12% in, but it just doesnt persuade me to play it at all. I cant put my finger on exactly what it is really, but i just cant get into it, and it really doesnt hold my attention for long at all. At the moment im even considering either upgrading my PC and getting GTR (especially after playing various demos over the last week! stunning game) or buying an Xbox and getting Forza Motorsport when its released!

the only real game ive found that grabs my attention at the moment is Toca Race Driver 2, it just has something really nice about it. the handling is predictable and controllable, but more importantly fun! especially with the online mode.

As for GTR! thats one hell of a game! the graphics are nothing but stunning, and the game play feels tight and accurate. you can feel every little twitch of the car, and it was definitely the most entertaining game ive played in a long time!

For real man, least in GT3 you could have some fun drifting.
