I just got one of these and I can honestly say, it's the most mind bogglingly excellent bit of kit!
I can't believe that something so tiny can be so good. Screen quality is just fantastic, the games are basically as good graphically as anything you can get on the PS2 - it's just amazing!
Can't wait until GT4 is released for it

its around £175 for the value pack.
Does it make much difference if I get a Japanese or US one?

The Japanese ones are alleged to have better quality screens. Not sure on the veracity of this though as I haven't checked mine next to a US one.
Games will come out thick and fast from now I suspect, once the US units take proper hold.
The quality of movies can be tailored for size, but look very very good even when compressed to 300bps (which will give around 2.5hrs on a 512Mb stick).
Excellent gadgets these.
PS I believe it's also possible to player multiplayer over the internet with a software download for your PC.

Are the games region/machine specific?
Not sure anyone's yet tested it, but Sony stated that games would work on all machines.
Movies and stuff could well be another matter, but then I'd never buy a UMD movie anyway when it's so easy to convert them on your Mac (or PC if you're so afflicted).

I've not tried this though as I suspect I'll need to spend a good bit of time getting it working (I'm on a Mac), and I couldn't be arsed just yet

The Movies will be, so be warned.
But would you honestly buy UMD movies?
They'll be similarly priced as DVDs from what I've read.
You're very unlikely to get a UMD home player and even if you did, I believe the discs only hold 2Gb (DVDs are 9Gb) so content will be restricted, as will quality. So they'd be limited for use on the PSP.
A 512Mb Memory Stick Duo can hold a couple of movies. It costs about 45 quid now, and can be written to many times (the ripping software to do the converting is free off the web, and easy to use).
The movie feature is the business on these things, but I won't be buying anything on UMD other than games.
I have just found out www.movietyme.com are doing PSP games now. I have used them many times in the past for DVDs, so it will be interesting to see how their service handles the games too.
