MY g/f is fed up of me playing on GT4 and wants a game of her own. She loves horror movies, but can't believe that a game could scare you. I know different ...

Anyone recommend a [really] scary game that someone new to them would be able to play? I've looked at Silent Hill 4 and that seems like it could do the trick.

Ideally for PS2, but possibly for PC.

Project Zero 2 (PS2) will certainly runs chills up your/her spine. It's psychological horror and plays with your imagination... instead of a monster jumping out of a cupboard shouting "Boo".

For me, the scariest game to date was System Shock 2 on the PC, but it's about 6 years old now.

Scariest game level ever is on Thief 3 which you can get for the PC it's called the Cradle and will make a grown man weep, very similar to system shock 2 as half the people who worked on it also worked on Thief 3. Other than that you might wait til Resident Evil 4 comes out on the PS2 a bit later in the year, just played through it on the Gamecube and it was awesome.

Scariest games for me were Clive Barker's Undying and Aliens vs Predator. Things jumping out at you all over the place making you pap yourself

Cheers for that guys, I'll check Project Zero out. Resident Evil does look good, doesn't it?

Aliens v Predator - I have that on PC and *I* thought it was really scary ... but she didn't

Couldn't play AVP at the time it was out, first couple of levels I was crawling along crapping myself at every blip on the motion detector until I nearly forced myself into a breakdown.. I'm obviously a lot tougher now..

I would add to the list Doom3 and System Shock 2 (both PC). Whilst SS2 is a bit old now, it can be bought from the budget bin and can be brought up to date graphically with a number of excellent community mods. Doom3 needs no introduction but will need a reasonably powerful PC.

Not so much crap your pants scary but pretty creepy, game called In Memoriam for the PC, basic premise is that it is a CD given to the police by a serial killer who has kidnapped a documentary maker and his girlfriend, you have to solve a series of puzzles by going onto the net and looking on real and made up websites, every successful puzzle releases a video clip made by the documentary maker before he was kidnapped, so a story starts to unfold, you then start getting emails to your normal inbox from other 'players' the game obviously just emails you and these provide clues and tips if you get stuck.

It gets really creepy when you eventually get the serial killer emailing you, taunting you. Especially creepy if you haven't played the game for a while, go to check your mailbox at work and there is a threat from a serial killer in your mailbox along with all the porn spam. Stops after about a week of you not playing but very chilling.

Personally, I thought it was the worst in all the Silent Hill series. It's the first one I never bothered to finish because it almost bored me to death. However, it did quite above average reviews, so there are plenty of people out there that enjoyed the experience.

Now see what you did! I had to pop into PC World at lunchtime, and ended up buying a copy! At least I think I did, the Thief 3 I got is called Deadly Shadows - is that the same thing? Will post back later with first impressions...!

try FARCRY. draw dropping graphics (you will need a hish spec pc }and a genuinely atmosheric story line. especially when you,re in the undergound bunkers. VERY scary, definately not easy and absolutely brilliant to look at and play. peter

You got the right game there Barma16, it's the penultimate level on the game though so you've got a bit of playing ahead of you, if you don't cack you're pants when you get to it you're made of sterner stuff than me, PC gamer ran a 10 page feature on the level a couple of issues back, pure psychological terror as a lot of it is left up to the imagination.

I thought that the original half life was very scary/tense.

the bit on half life 2 where you go under the bridge is really bad too.

thats worrying, i didnt bother finishing the first three because they were more puzzle games than action/scary

thanks for the feedback.

If you want another game that's tense/atmospheric, try Vietcong, and make her play it on the hardest difficulty level
