I finally bought GT4 yesterday and when I put the CD into the PS2 it started making a chugging/whiring kind of noise. The noise is intermittent but there more often than not and only stops when I turn off the console. Also, the game only loads 50% of the time so it can take ages and get really frustrating to play. This only happens with GT4 and no other game. Any ideas? Anyone else get the same?

That used to happen on my PS1 - turned out the console was f***ed - although it is strange it only happen on GT4 on yours.

Could be that it needs adjusting. See here:

Remmember that GT4 is the most hardware intensive game yet released. So if your PS2 is on the way out (or near) its gonna be GT4 that shows it.

Read quite a few posts on various forums where people have blamed GT4 for the demise of their consoles...particularly the new skinny ones.

I scratched my disc and whenever I played it, mid race the console would start making a chugging noise trying to read the disc. Then when the race was over and I'd get the little spinning icon thingie, it'd be red instead of white and it'd hang. Turned off the in game music and all is well again.

My playstation 2 kept saying DISK READ ERROR. I put up with it for months. Sometimes the game or DVD would load and sometimes not. I got so p***ed off i bought a new slimline and had great satisfaction destroying the old one with golf club and cricket bat.

Looks like it's not the game, but my 3 year old PS2. I took it over to my brother's yesterday and on his 2 year old machine it worked perfectly. I may have to open it up and perform some amateur surgery.
