Guys,

A friend and I are having a bit of a lap time trial competition at the 'Ring, would be cool if a few more people joined in, so I open it to you.

The rules are as follows:

Car: Standard M5
Tyres: Medium Sports
All driver turned off.

So, take one fat boy M5 and fling it round the ring as fast as you can.

I have only had the game since last Thursday, but have seen my times steadily drop from 9.17 to 8.30 down to my current personal best of:

7 mins 47.8 secs

If you can, please post photos of your laptimes to verify.

Gentlemen, start your engines....

As a real world refernce, Horst von Saurma lapped the 'Ring in an E39 M5 in 8:28 (3/1/1999).

Whoever claimed that the GT4 times were within 1% of the real thing was talking utter crap.

I'm guessing we're talking about the new M5 (the 507bhp one), not the E39 ?

I think the only reason lap times aren't "real", is that in the game, you can have a 150mph spin, bounce off a barrier & then keep going. In the real world, you may be on the limit at 120, and going any faster will result in a crash. In the game, there is no such worry !

If you do a lap with no incidents, the lap time should be a lot more "real"......

(edited because I spell guessing with an r ?????)

We are indeed talking about the V10 M5. The new one.

I am still struggling with this; can't get a lap together without incident.

6.32 is very impressive indeed. I can't imagine getting round that fast in this car.

Will keep trying though.

Come on guys! Step up to the challenge.

Chipping away at it still.

7.33

By the way, the car must not have any settings altered in any way. And no driver aids on as said on a previous post.

Ring challenges are boring if you dont have the course memorized.

Would you not agree that driving round it as quickly as possible may be an effective way of memorising it?

I find your comment interesting, as you suggest that it is only when you have done hundreds of laps that it moves on from the realms of boredom, and begins to be fun. Something wrong in the logic there I think.

Boring, and pointless since there is tons of room for error and the times can flucuate a lot nearly nullifying the competitve sense of it.

Its more fun and competitive trying to shave that hundreth of a second off that perfect lap on a shorter track than it is just trying to run a clean lap on the ring which takes seconds off your time.

Ok..... Both are fun, but this track is the best for sorting the men from the boys!!

I say stick with this challenge. I will give it a go over the weekend and come back with the winning time on Monday.

Why do people keep complaining about the lap times in GT4 when if you simply read the selection criteria it says Tyres: Medium Sports which are slicks and if you have the game you will know that you can choose road tyres is you wish.

Further more the tyre screens in GT mode state that the Luxury (or Comfort in arcade mode) tyres are closest to normal road tyres. This also seems to be the consensus on the forums at GTPlanet.

I'm guessing the reason why the default is the soft sports tyres is that GT4 is a GAME! I expect millions of people will play the game and only a fraction of them will be concerned with driving around with slow tyres, which (for the majority) are very difficult to drive on.

As someone has already said on this forum, you only have to look at the G forces the slicks can sustain to realise they are not real.

So if you want realism, put the Luxury/ comfort/ N2 tyres on your car.

Feel better now

And if anyone wants a real challenge take the Ruf BTR around the Ring on Comfort tyres

Agree - TVRs/911s etc feel fairly accurate renditions once on comfort tyres. Wheelspin, slide, gather it up, bounce off a kerb, slide...at speeds that you can react to

Whoever got under 7 is either dealing with a much-modified car or talking clear through his underpants.

I ran 7'37" just driving smoothly, not going over the limit anywhere, and I think the limit's around 7'30".

That'd be me then
High 0.9s is as good as it gets in the real world without aero aids.

I haven't been able to improve on the 7.33 I ran a few days ago, but I know it wasn't quite a perfect lap. It was a smooth and restrained lap rather than a balls out job. I reckon it would be possible to dip under 7.30, but it would be a lap worth saving. The thing about the M5 is that it is ballistic in a straight line, and the faster you go the harder it gets to control on the tricky bits. One particularly good exit on a corner reveals bumps you never knew were there on the following straight.

Saw this thread, jumped on and pulled a 7.46. 2nd attempt which was sometimes in front of, sometimes behind my ghost resulted in 7.38.69. I was in a sand pit at one point, I would imagine in a few months time 7.30 or less would be quite do-able. Its amazing, looking at my ghost compared to the current lap just how much time a different line through a corner can save you!

May give it another try another time, but Im hooked on doing the ring in that 345 brake 205. Have been playing my mate this week, we turned catchup off and on a 2 lap race with no waiting, were seperated by 0.7s. After racing like that I find the game quite boring on my own, so bring on online play!

Edit: I could post a pic, but Im not claiming to be under 7m now am I?

Edit Edit: I cant spell for shit

Anyone wants a real challenge I suggest taking the final licence test in the special licences. Mercedes Evo Touring car, around the 'ring. It has to be a clean lap since ou can't put a wheel wrong otherwise you fail the test. It'd be interesting to see how many people get a gold.
