Is there something seriously wrong with the physics of GT4? This is sort of 1971 F1 car pace... The tyrell with the fastest lap in 1971 weighed 550kg and had 440hp... and had slick tyres too.

I guess you could be right, i have seen an video clip on the net that shows a le mans car do it in under 4 min 40 sec !! The only thing i can think of is that you are willing to take more risks in the game and therefore drive harder, and not have to worry about machine faults... etc - awesome fun though !!

Getting the wheel and pedals next week will be interesting to see how quick it is then ...

You're probably right tricky... its less scary when you know you won't die.

Anyway, sounds like a good time

Yeah, I think its more down to the fact that you wont die if you crash, so you are therefore fearless

That would smash Stefan Bollof's record by 90 seconds, do you have a link?

Don't forget that in 1971 they still used the Sudschliefe also, which is where the current GP circuit is situated. Drivers would go out of the pits (still roughly in the same place on the GP circuit) and do a lap of the Southern loop, to check nothing was going to fall off the car, before embarking on qualifying.

It still seems a bit on the speeded up side, though.

The times are great but let GT4 down a lot. If the BMW record times are something like 8m22 for the M3 and 8m00 for the M3 CSL, the fact that these are getting beaten by a minute plus can't just be down to how good the people driving are (sorry guys!) but some bad inaccuracies in the physics .. a shame since I always thought GT4 was supposed to be pretty spot on.

Was the time set on 'road' or 'sports' tyres. I think sports tyres in GT4 are sort of trackday nutter rubber, thats barely road legal. Try it on 'road' tyres and I bet you won't be a million miles off the real time.

I beleive one of the tests they did was to get a NISMO development driver to set a laptime around the 'Ring in a real Skyline GTR, and then do it in GT4 using the same car. The laptimes were within 1% of each other (8:15 IIRC)

Bought it yesterday and went straight for the 350Z GT4. 9:30 on my first attempt at the game, round Nurburgring.

Another couple of attempts in the NSX-R and I got it down to 8:30 on standard tyres.

A couple of things to bear in mind about the game is that firstly, everybody is braver whem all risk is removed. Secondly, the size of the ring means that different parts of the track will suffer different weather.

This means the grip will be slightly unpredictable from one section to the next. Only in a computer game can you have perfect sunshine and consistent grip the whole way around.

I'd disagree with that. I've got a DVD here of Hans Stuck doing a full Nurburgring lap (F1 + Nordschleife) in about 8m in a M3 GTR, with slicks, >500bhp, straight cut gears etc. It's a beautiful sunny day and anyone who's seen it can attest it's a proper balls out lap.

I can't believe there is another 30-40s to gain just by throwing caution to the wind, I really can't ..

It's a shame that they have not managed to keep it as true to life as they claim... however does not take any off the enjoyment out of the game....

However you also have to remember that the game takes the cars as if they were perfect, which as we all know they rarely are !! With areas of a cars engine not performing perfectly and therefore losing time every mile and a long circuit like the ring it will show up far more obviously than on a shorter track - i.e. le mans circuit best lap in M3 GTR 543 bhp is 3 min 49 sec - world record is 3.33 so that seems pretty accurate to me.....

I read in Evo (I think) and maybe on here too that the development driver in the GT-R said in the game they could take faster lines that are just too dangerous to try in real life.

The tyres also make a very big difference, I think the default: sports medium are medium softness slicks, road tyres are much harder. You have to be very gental when first accellerating and braking, and fast corners you could take at full speed on the sports have the back end breaking away before you've even hit the apex.

This is with the Driving Force Pro, which I think makes the game harder, but also so much more rewarding. I'm sure when using the DS controller there is some sort of steering assistance, just because the range of movement is much more limited.

It was set on sports tyres with a wing added for downforce. Driver aids set as follows:-

Oversteer - 0
Understeer - 20
TCM - 0

Plus years of practice on the real thing......

The major difference is the fact that I'm not going to get killed in the game!
