GT4 not saving "Best Lap" between races

Not sure if this is a glitch, a design fault, or a user issue

If I do a race on a circuit, any circuit it seems, the Best Lap display will show my best lap for the race, but if I then race on that circuit again it starts off blank (ie it's forgotten that storming lap I did five minutes ago). How do you find out what your lap record is for a given track?

You need to set them in time trials, well that was the case in GT3
