What are the main differences between the various platforms(PS 2, X-box, GameCube)?

Which one would you buy now?

I'm looking for a new toy!

Got all of them and can only say that the one that gets the most use is the X-box (mainly due to Halo, I must say)

Variouos strengths and weaknesses. For the choicest games around I have a Gamecube. For Project Gotham 2 I have an X-Box. I have no interest in getting a PS2 just now to be honest. Although GT4 could tempt me.

It really comes down to what games you want to play. Comparisons based on processing power and bits are now largely irrelevant.

Buy a PS2 with GTA San Andreas. Nothing else comes close.

Xbox - Online Multiplay
GameCube - Local multiplay
PS2 - Single player

You really need all of them to get the best games in each genre.

Ok, so the box is not that important...

what do you reckon are the best games?

I know Halo, and I've read about GT4, what else do you folks think are really cool?

It's not the platform that matters so much. Look at what games you want to play, then look at what they are on. If you just want to get into gaming get a PS2 because it has the most games.

GTR is coming out for the x-box and that looks like an awesome simulator. Project gotham 2 was fun and has damage at least. Gran Turismo is entertaining for the fact it's real cars etc, but the fact the racing is crap and there's no damage ultimately means it doesn't have lasting appeal.

Other than that i don't know, find non-driving games; especially grand theft auto, very very boring.

Cheers,
Rob.

A well-specced PC will always be a few years ahead of the best consoles, performance-wise.

Mario Kart Double Dash for the GameCube is just as good if not better...

would also cost more than the £100 for the likes of PS2 or Xbox, so not comparing apples with apples really.

For a couple of minutes, anyway :-)

The lifespan of a kick-ass gaming PC is measured in months at best. A console will keep playing the latest games for years.

The thread title is "Best gaming platform", not "Best value gaming platform"!

yup and with the word best being as broad and loose a term as it is you have to have a level of comparison to be able to make a valid judgement on what is best. imho of course.

Playstation people are convinced GT4 is great. Even a moderate PC has way more processing power than a PS2. PCs can simulate the physics of driving much more accurately. They can also do better graphics and aren't limited to crappy TV resolution. GT4 is just hyped a lot.

I have all 3 platforms to be honest i find no real difference between the ps2 and the xbox but the gamecube is a definate third.

Most new games come out on all platforms now but the ps2 has a larger back catalogue IMO.

Currently playing need for speed 2 on ps2 and burnout 3 on xbox the driving on burnout is useless but the crashes are fun!

I find that the GameCube has better games for younger players, which makes it ideal for my son.

I bought PS2 for Gran Turismo 3 when it came out (having bought my original Playstation for the original GT when it came out)

I bought an XBox solely for Halo, but have since bought quite a few games for it. It is also the best for online play.

I've since bought a 2nd XBox - a limited edition Japanese-spec green Halo 2 box which the seller had modded to a UK PSU and an Xecuter 3 mod chip and has SNES and N64 emulators installed on it, which is a blast from the past.
