Playstation 2, X-Box or what?
Discussion
As one of a generation for whom Playstation was something that other people did to waste their time, I now face the inevitable consequence of having a wife who wants one with a Colin McRae rally game.
Now I don't know who this Colin McRae upstart is but I assume he's someone new who came along after Paddy Hopkirk.
The question is which of breed is best? X-Box, PS2 or something else? To be honest, you could give me a black and white edition of Space nvaders and 'd be happy but she may be more critical.

I personally went for the Xbox with mod-chip, 120GB hard drive and dashboard all in for about £230, this means I can now download games straight onto it.
As to which is the best it depends on the games you want to pay final fantasy and GT go for the PS2, PGR2 and Halo2 go for the XBOX. The Xbox has the best online facilities if you like that sort of social draining facility.
I think the xbox has slightly better graphics, but since I got my xbox I found no need to own a PS2 anymore so I have no direct comparison.
All my own opinions of course, Im sure someone else will disagree.

Its difficult to define whats best in terms of these 2 consoles.
In terms of raw hardware, the XBox is best, it'll do better graphics.
In terms of games, most people agree that the PS2 is best.
If you only get one you do miss out on some games. PS2 owners will have to do without the Halo series, XBoxers will have to do without Jak and Daxter series.
The big advantage withthe PS2 is it has loads more games than the XBox (it can play play station games as well) and when the PS3 comes out, that will play all the PS and PS2 games. The XBox just plays XBox games and the rumour is the XBoxNext (coming out in about a year or so) won't play current XBox games.
I've got a PS2, my mates have got both PS2's and XBoxes and if I could only have one, it'll be the PS2.
Only downside is the PS2 is in short supply as its so popular for xmas.

I say, you chaps speak "computerese" very fluently. Perhaps it would be cheaper if I engaged this Colin McRae chappy for Christmas dinner on Christmas Day so he can be scared witless by my wife's lane-carving.
From what you are saying, I'm guessing the PS2 would be better for the general beginner not hell bent on something more difficult than Sonic The Hedgehog.
Now to find one..... now what's this internet thingy all about....

Xbox with online Project Gotham 2, no contest.......
I've got both and they're both very good. The PS2 has more games but I think the Xbox is the superior machine and I prefer the games that are exclusive to Xbox rather than PS2.
If I could only have one it'd be the Xbox, which is modded and with a 120GB hard drive that will fit a load of games on. The hard drive is a real advantage in my opinion because it means that you only ever have to use the original disc once to install the game, so you don't have to worry about damaging originals.

I've got both, and the PS2 had been gathering dust until GTA San Andreas was released.
BTW I asked the fount of all knowledge that is a Dixons sales assistant when PS2s would be in stock in this country and he said they were on a boat on a canal somewhere. What he meant was the Suez canal, but I'm convinced he had some mental picture of Rosie and Jim doing a sideline in international freight.

Get an XBOX, a couple of mods tweaks and Linux later and you can use it to play your fav PS2 games and get the best of both worlds.......
Ooo Ooo, how?? Pray tell, off the forum if you prefer.
I got my X-box to play PGR2 and TOCA Race Driver 2, however GT4 looks stonking, and i dont want a second console.....

Well, as the Xbox is basically a stripped-down PC and therefore has a Microshite operating system I'd say go for a PS2.
There are far more games available for the PS2 and the graphics are plenty good enough. Most games are released for the PS2 first as there is a much larger market for them (IIRC, around 6 to 1 ratio). The PS3 will probably be released late 2005 and should be able to run PS2 games so your investment wouldn't be wasted.
Basically then:
PS2 = good graphics, custom architecture and massive choice of games (& San Andreas ).
Xbox = better graphics, PC-based and far smaller range of games.

They are only £100 each, get all 3
PS2 for single player stuff.
XBox for online multiplayer
Gamecube for multiplayer
Wise words mate.
Nothing, and I repeat nothing, can beat (Gamecube) Monkey Ball 1 & 2 for multiplayer hillarity. Or maybe Samba Di Amigo (but that's on the Dreamcast).
Don't play my PS2 much anymore. Currently ploughing through a DVD my mate found on Ebay for Xbox which has tons of emulators for old consoles and about 14,000 games.

Had an evening last night playing Mario Kart DD and Bomberman Generations.
Managed to prise myself away at 3am.
Hilarious.
Before Mario Kart DD came out I didn't think they could actually make that game any better.
How wrong I was....
Thought Bomberman Gen. was a bit over egged but its still a cracking laugh.
Recently just bought Marawu Made in Wario (GB adv sp). Its the one with the mercury switches in the cartridge so you control it by rotating the GB left and right. Most addictive game I've played for ages. No idea what's going on though as its all in Japanese.
