PS2 vs XBox vs ???
Discussion
Been out of the console world for a few years. Still got a SNES which i play quite a bit... retro!
Mum's nagging me about Xmas and i jokingly said "ah, what about a PS2" and she's up for it.
Now... do i go for a PS2 or an XBox?
I'm edging towards PS2 as a mate has an XBox and might be moving into my flat next year.
Whats the games situation like? Both formats equally catered for?
Cheers

In regards to the PS2 v xbox question i would say..... get that mate of yours moved in a.s.a.p and get a PS2 for crimbo so that you can enjoy the best of both consoles.
I really can't split the two, PS2 for range of games (and Gran Turismo!), xbox for smoother graphics and some great games too! I didn't like the xbox at first then bought one just for PGR2 and have gradually seen my collection grow!
Just reading this post back i realise that it is of no help to your decision at all!
Is it possible to pick up a secound hand xbox and ps2 for the price of one new console?

If you've got broadband then get an xbox & live account - makes for great sets of virtual mates...
With the XBox yuo also don't need memory cards for save games - just stored internally. I know it sounds daft but was a real pain when I had my PS2 (gave it away after getting xbox).
XBox is also more 'hackable' in that you can put linux etc on it.

Id go the PS2 route mate (get one of those nice small PS2's ) if only for gran turismo 3 a-spec and gt4 when it comes out! plus network gaming is great fun too. When i was over at my brothers i was using his xbox and to be honest it just seemed to have something missing, which i cant quite put my finger on.
All depends on what games you want to play, I've got a PS2 and my Brothers got an XBox.
Not used either online (use My PC for that) and with the on-line portion of GT4 effectivly given the elbow I won't. Also the new PS2 has the network adapter built in.
The XBox has better graphics but the PS2 seems to offer smoother gameplay in many games. My Brother has Burnout 3 which is a fantastic game but in two player mode the frame rate does suffer, where as the PS2 version is smoother although the graphics arn't as sharp. Another example is Project Gotham 2 which only runs at 30fps whereas GT3 (and GT4) runs at 60fps.
One benefit of memory cards which the XBox falls down on is that if you take your game around to a mates house, you can't take the game progess with you. So if you have unlocked new tracks, cars, teams, levels, whatever you can't take them with you. Does anyone know if you get get memory cards for the XBox?
As for system life, the Xbox2 won't be out for at least a year and probably early 2006 at the earliest in the UK and Sony are even further away for the PS3, so I wouldn't worry about that

They plug into the controller of the XBOX rather than the console itself (unlike PS/2).
As an example, click here for Memory Units at Amazon.

Exactly, choose the games you want to play and then buy the machine that has the most of them.
There is nothing like playing a game with a bunch of mates online. XBox live has the better on line service than the PS2 at the moment, so if you want to play against "intelligent" opposition get an XBOX.
Apart from the odd one or two games most are multiplatform release nowadays anyway
