Strange problem with UT2004 locking
Discussion
I've got an odd one with UT2004. Have just bought a pukka version of UT2k4 and installed it on my wife's AMD 1800+ (512mb, 64mb Geforce3 Ti200).
It randomly locks, say every hour or so, totally freezing the machine (hard reset time)
I've installed the latest UT2004 patch.
I've updated the graphics drivers.
I've updated the sound drivers.
I've checked for malicious virii et al.
I've recently installed a large CPU heatsink and fan, and CPU core temperature never goes about 59c or 60c now (it was creeping up into the early 60's with the older, smaller heatsink)
The machine will play UT2003 for many, many hours without problem. The problem is not restricted to online or offline play, both will lock.
I'm not exactly sure what to try next. Any thoughts ?

Yes.
Your memory is either faulty OR you are running it too fast. Try reducing the FSB memory to CPU ratio in BIOS. e.g. you might have a Front Side Bus speed of 300MHz with a 3:4 ratio you are running your RAM at 400MHz.
Your board might have something called top performance on/off in BIOS, instead of more precise memory timings, try turning it off and then seeing.
If its not good enough to take it you will get these sorts of problems. The reason it doesnt hapen with other games/applications is that they probably arent hammering the memory AND/OR using all of it up thus highlighting the ropey memory area in one of your chips.

Thank for the reply
I'm not sure that it's memory speed as this is a vanilla out of the box machine, I've not (knowingly) changed any speeds. However I will check.
Good point about the memory though. I've got 2x 256mb sticks ... I think I'll take each one out in turn, and see if it stops on just one or the other stick

Funny you should say that coz last night I noticed another strange problem. SpeedFan was registering four sensor temperatures : 70c 55c 35c and -35c. The 70c worried me coz I thought it was the CPU
So I loaded Mother Board Monitor on, and that gave me more info. It said the case temp was -35c (presumably a disconnected or missing sensor), the CPU is 55c and the memory 35c (both fine).
But it didn't say what "sensor 4" at 70c was. Now, to me, 70c is rather high ? What could that other sensor be, the graphics card ?
(luckily I'm thinking of replacing the card anyway, I'm just trying to find a 4x card around the £80-£90 mark that's a big step up from the current GeForce3 64mb jobbie)

This is what I've just got and it is a lot fatser than my previous geforce 4

I had a similar problem with Doom3 and Star Wars Battlefront. After trying all the usual steps (update video drivers, disk-check/defrag, check cpu & video card temps) I bought a more powerful PSU (480 watts ).
Everything runs perfectly now
(I do have three hard drives, 1 cd rom drive, 1 floppy drive, Creative Live! sound system, various PCI cards & a USB multi-card reader hooked up )
