As suggested, I'm buying a copy of GPL.
I've been browsing a bit and have seen HEAPS of addons for this game (other season's cars, tracks, even Le Mans + Ford GT40s, Ferrari P4s, ...)

What do you consider to be the 'necessary' extras/upgrades?

Thanks,

Alex

PS: is it possible to play the game without a steering wheel?

Go here and get the all-in-one patch to update from the original version. It's simple to install and takes about half a second to update. Then get stuck into the track database.

Try here for some car updates to get them all looking and sounding really good.

I bought the game about 2 months ago and I can't stop playing it. I reckon I'm about half way to mastering it - I spent about an hour last night hammering an Eagle-Weslake around Spa and it was far more enjoyable than watching the footy!

A steering wheel is a must if you are going to play the game properly. I'm currently using one without feedback although I think that I may well make an investment in one soon.

Good luck and don't be put off if you spin at every corner for the first week of playing it - just wait until you crack your first perfect lap of Spa and the frustration will be more than worth it!

Recommended track, car, sound & extras updates, plus the order in which to add them

A steering wheel isn't a must. I use a joystick and someone else in the pistonheads league uses a gamepad and we're both in the top 3 in the pistonheads league Infact i believe FWD is currently only, what, 2nd isn't it?

Cheers,
Rob.

Apparently the Papyrus team often used a joystick for steering, and pedals for accel/brake

I'm trying to get the 'Sold Out' version of GPL up and running, but it says I haven't inserted a valid CD

Can someone please direct me to a link that currently works for the 'all-in-one' patch and the 'no-cd patch'

Thanx

http://trackdb.d2g.com/

Left hand side for All-in-one patch.

If the No CD patch isn't in there try here - www.theuspits.com/sims/gpl/files/gplnocd_gb.zip (UK Version)

What do mean neither connect to anything? They both work for me, the first goes to the GPL tracks database and the 2nd is a zip file for the NO-CD patch held on the US Pits website.

Try again, might just be your connection.

First link goes to the GPL Tracks Database, click on link on l/h side for the all-in-one patch. Try and download patch from any of the various countries and nothing happens.

Second link just brings up a 'page cannot be displayed' message.

If these links currently work for you any idea what could be wrong with my connection?

Solved the problem.
I have 3 disk partitions and my cdrom wasn't my last drive letter, so I sorted that.
Re-installed GPL and used the 3 patches from the 'Sold Out' cdrom and now it runs fine.
Now I just need to add all of the track, car and sound add-ons and then it will be running in all of its glory.
Thanks for your help.

Now that I have finally got broadband at home, is it worth getting GPL?

I assume it is Grang Prix Legends? How much is this to buy, or can I download it?

I haven't got a steering wheel either, but can the keyboard be used instead? I have always used the keyboard for driving games so am fairly used to it.

What do I need to race online with you guys?

You will quite often find it in the budget section at PC World for £4.99

GPL is unlike most racing games.

You will NEED a proper controller with proportinal steering and throttle/braking. With a keyboard you cannot feed in the power coming out of bends, or adjust the steering properly. It's a bugger and completely frustrating to learn, but excellent once you get going
