Two problems whilst playing Doom3
Discussion
Just got my new PC (Evesham Dominator, AMD3500+, Connect3d X800Pro 256mb) and I've got two problems with Doom3 (oh ... my ... god ... how good is that game ?!?!) I wondered if anyone might be able to help with ?
1. First, it wont recognise the fact that I've got surround, even though I've got a Creative Labs Audigy 2ZS and 7.1 speakers. I just keeps saying "you haven't got surround sound". Surround works fine in other programs, and in all the test programs that come from Creative ("front left speaker, front right speaker, side right speaker ...")
2. Doom3 plays rather nicely at 1280x1024 with "high" settings. However, I frequently get what I can only describe as a slight "splitting" of the screen (usually when moving around quite vigorously) where at some point in the screen the top half and bottom half of the image are slightly out of synch with each other, say 5mm to the left or right of the other half. The "split" can happen anywhere on the screen, and sometimes you even get 2 split lines. After the tiniest fraction of a second it corrects itself, but it's kinda annoying. It's nor performance related because even on 640x480 with the lowest settings it still does it. Doesn't do it in UT2003 even set at 1600x1200 with max graphics.
Help ?!?
Cheers !

Have you done the obvious such as running the latest drivers for all your cards? What about updating the motherboard drivers...
edit:: Oh, and it's flucking scary game! I got back into the main facility on the starting mission before thinking "nope, too dark and scary" Back to SimCity and XpandRally then

Need to turn on Vertical Sync.
Options -> System -> Advanced Options -> change Vertical Sync to 'YES'

Judas : spot on ! That's done the trick, thanks. (out of interest, what is that, and why isnt it set on automatically anyway ?)
The vertical sync option determines whether the graphics card is forced to draw the whole frame before the next one is shown. Switching it off can increase your framerate but introduce the 'tearing' effect you described, where the card renders a slightly different image on the lower half of the screen as it tries to keep up with what's happening in the game. It's switched off by default because the visual problems it causes aren't usually very noticable and it stops the framerate dropping.
Or something like that

Stop playing PC games & get an X-Box!
Just kidding.....I know a "proper" PC will wee all over an X-Box but you know when you put the disc in, you won't have to feck around with all those different settings.
And, just to add; HOW scary is scary then?
Already got an X Box. Dont play it much. Why ?
a) The graphics look distinctly 1980's (okay, maybe 1990's ) Just dont hold a candle to a PC.
b) I sometimes like playing C&C type strategy / resource building games, which you dont really get on X Box
c) I dont really get on with the controller ... give me a mouse anyday, its be 10x faster to whip around. Especially for 1st person shooters.
d) I'm cr*p at most games But I enjoy playing. However, sometimes, to progress without having to kill the same monsters over and over again, I have to save fairly often. With X Box games you dont often get a choice when you can save (e.g. Red Dead Revolver) or get only a couple of saves per level (e.g. Rainbow Six 3). The best game for saves I've ever played on X Box was Halo ... fairly frequent automatic ones. Just suits my (poor) gaming style

p.s. Oh, and bleedin scary ! Either of the "jump out at you" type, or the tension building "scary movie" type. Just had this one bit where a new type of monster appears, you get a bit of cut scene as it appears, then it tries to break into the locked room that you are in ... its so nicely done, it really had me blobbing my pants !!!
